Notice a difference in performance if I add another 2x 512mb sticks of ram, so that I have 2x 1GB AND 2x 512mb for a total of 3GB (with both sets being in dual channel mode) ..???

XP SP3

You will, but as bdt said, the difference won't be that pronounced as if you went from 1GB to 2GB of RAM. :)

Yep, tho' not as pronounced as the jump from 1-2gig. Also, as far as a 32bit OS goes, it's the practical upper limit of how much to put in.

Interesting that ... I have 4Gb in my Dell notebook running Vista 32-bit ... Previously, when going to Control Panel -> System, it displayed 3582Mb memory (which is correct ito the 32-bit architecture). HOWEVER, after upgrading to SP1, it now shows the full 4Gb, BUT Task Manager -> Performance tab still only shows 3582Mb physical memory ...

no u wont not with xp

there will be zero difference

nothingn in xp will ever use more than 3 gigs

maybe vista but not xp

Get Windoze XP 64 bit.

BTW what do you need that much RAM for? Adobe Premiere? Adobe Photoshop? Games?

When I doubled my RAM from 2x512 to 2x1GB I noticed a really wonderful performance increase. But further on, you will only notice a performance increase if you actually make use of at least 2/3 of it.

MS changed the displayed amount from memory in use to memory installed because it was confusing people. Nothing actually changed. Sorry.

That's a good thing, since he's planning to upgrade to 3GB of RAM ;)

Ya I didn't say anything about 4GB did I, ..so kewl, little extra boost then for not so much cash since 512mb sticks are dirt cheap atm! Yay :)
I doubt I'll migrate to Vista for a couple years, unless something drastic happens, probably just skip to the next one they bring out, if it's not a terrible flop like Vista.

The canonical answer to the XP/32 3gig memory barrier ..at least one that's easy to read!
