Will InfraCo become a Third National Operator?

OMG can u say Telkom + Sat-3/SAFE AGAIN!!

Various telecoms players, including ISPA and DataPro, have asked for clarity on InfraCo, but unfortunately details about the new telecoms player remains sketchy.

*sigh

There is speculation that InfraCo may become a government controlled third national operator that will compete with Telkom and Neotel in the broadband space.

Oh like that's a good idea... When we said competition we meant real competition, not government departments playing at it... Ah well, the additional infrastructure is welcome...

Why do we keep believing rumours when official statements have been made?

"Neotel has a heads of agreement with the DPE, regarding the lease of the Infraco assets. Infraco will be a utility type company providing bandwidth to other operators rather than a fully fledged telco offering voice and data services to end users. As stated by the Minister for Public Enterprises, the long distance infrastructure of InfraCo will initially be made available only through Neotel. Neotel will use this long-distance infrastructure to provide integrated next-generation services to its customers – wholesale, enterprises as well as consumers. Neotel will also have the rights to sell capacities to other operators as part of this arrangement."

Well said. I wish this could finally be laid to rest. When Infraco start selling to consumers, then you may all bitch and moan. At the moment there's no evidence to suggest InfraCo won't be exactly what was stated above.

Yep, InfraCo and Neotel aint got nothing if they don't have cheap intl bandwidth!

sorry was in a hurry this morning.. uhm what i meant was Telkom was given sat-3/safe when they privatised.. how much bet infraco will eventually be privatised with u know who heavilly invested in it after the citizens have footed the bill for it

Hi Eremos and Ads

Thanks for the feedback.

Official statements have indeed been made, but as we have learned in the past these statements are often not as accurate as they should be. EASSy is a good example…at the same conference information emerged that EASSy does not look the same as the initial plan, and this is why we are willing to publish speculation regarding these issues.

What is true is that we should have actually included this statement in the article to give the current official view…our apology for not doing that.

Regards,

RPM

Another "imminent" goverment project............................

If they as good at reducing bandwidth cost as they are at curbing crime, corruption and aids, then we are completely xxxxxed...............
