Will my car be written off?

Lol yea true, I actually would prefer to have my car back, but will just hafto wait and see.. Sorry about not posting pics yet, been on my phone so long, shall do it later today. Cheers!

I had a bumper bash years back, really minor. I even drove home, bonnet slightly bent but nothing insane. Renew it wrote the car off. I was like :wtf:

Anyways, insurance sent it to another place and they fixed it for a reasonable price.

I thought the "rule" was if damage costs exceeds value of car only then it gets written off? Because the insurance company would then have to pay out the full market/retail value of the car to you instead of the lower repair charges?

No, the cost of the repair mustn't exceed 25% (as far as I recall) of the value of the car. Bit of a weird one, as all that you have to do is set off the airbags and you can write off some cars, because they are so bloody expensive to replace.

If the repairs amount to more than 30% of the value of the car it will be scraped but quotations are generally inflated so you can let them payout and you can offer to buy back the car at a minimal cost and have it repaired yourself.

Isn't it the other way around? My insurance will write it off only if the value of the repair is more than 70% of the value of the car.

That's how it was when mine was written off. Only had it for two months, so don't feel too bad for yourself. :/

Trust me, you'll rather want to have it scrapped than sit with issues popping up forever. It'll cost you thousands over the years to fix new issues that pop up due to the original accident. Also, you'll be stuck with it because nobody will want to buy that car off you.

Even though the car has been written off be sure to keep the keys. Some backyard operation will most likely buy it from the insurance and fix it up. A few weeks/months down the line they'll give you a call and ask for the keys. Happened to me, my sister and a good friend of mine.

I'd suggest that you get a second quote on the repairs - Try The Body Shoppe in fourways ( If you are Sandton area ) - They did my repairs for a very good price.

Otherwise if you ask the insurance company to pay you out the maximum repair value and try and get it done for less than that yourself, it might be worthwhile ( though a hassle ) - But you can even come out at a profit that way.

There are always avenues to take, don't give up on your baby just yet :)

Didn't want to create a new thread so I'll just threadjack this one :)

Out of interest would someone mind elaborating on this please?

My car was in an accident a couple of weeks back during the silly season. It's currently standing at my house and some or the other towing company was tasked by my insurance to come fetch the car. According to the lady I spoke to they're going to write it off.

The thing is I got a quote from a good buddy of mine who told me that he'll fix the car for me for 16k (he's a panel beater). I'm thinking of taking up this offer.

Here's a copy and paste from the quote he gave me. This is on a Mazda 3 2 liter 2004 model

REPLACE
BONNET
B/CATCH
R/FENDER
L/FENDER
R/H/LIGHT
L/H/LIGHT
GRILL
BUMPER
B/STIFFENER
B/GRILLS
CRADLE
LOWER CONTROL ARM(WISHBONE)
FILTER ADAPTOR
*MAG/WHEEL
WINDSCREAN
SUNDRIES

Now I don't kniow WTF these things are (execept a few).

So how do I go about things now. Do I tell my insurance I'll buy the car back from them? The thing is my wife loves this car (I taught her how to drive with it) and she doesn't want me to get rid of it

Dude, let it go. When your insurance company is willing to write something off then its always best to go that route. Its your chance to get something new without going through the hassles of selling your car. You'll pretty much get the same is you would if you traded it in.

About the car being fixed up, most definitely that car of yours is going to get fixed up, but I would not want to be the person buying it.

I have no emotional attachment to the car, in fact I was going to sell it this year anyway (want a Cruze), the thing is convincing the wife.

In fact I told the insurance people to call her and tell her because THEN she'll get the picture :D

Agreed dude, let it go, remember it's accident damaged, the chances of something going wrong later (after it has been fixed) is 10 fold, IMO a car that has been in an accident is never the same again. :(

I wrote my wife's micra off 6months ago, and she attached so much value to this car and she was heart broken, but then when she got her replacement (Honda Jazz) she barely speaks of the micra lol....

A car is man made, get another one if you can.

let it go, imo at R16k repair that is a dodge job, i.e straightening of brackets instead of replacement etc.

also unless that suspension damage is fixed correctly it will always give issues.

Very true. Cars are only worth holding onto when they are not giving you problems. If it starts giving problems, get rid of it. Once a car has been in an accident it is bound to give your problems.

Besides, why drive a car that has been in an accident if you can drive one that had not been in one for about the same money? Same goes for ex-rentals in my view.

Rouxenator, you still didn't explain why I should not give the keys to the towing company. Surely I have no use for it now?

i think his point is to piss off whoever buys the vehicle to fix it as they either need to contact you or have new keys made or a new ignition etc
