i think his point is to piss off whoever buys the vehicle to fix it as they either need to contact you or have new keys made or a new ignition etc

Its your choice - in all three cases we never thought of or were asked to include the keys.

Nope, I don't think they are frauds, well not all of them at least. The guy that fixed up my Bantam did it at home in his backyard. He was a very friendly guy and was grateful that we still have the keys, said it saved him the effort and cost of fitting new locks and ignition.

Rouxenator, you still didn't explain why I should not give the keys to the towing company. Surely I have no use for it now?

People buy the write offs from the Insurance companies.

So if your car is a write off you are sure to get a guy rock up at your house asking if you have the keys for the car still.

Coded keys are expensive to replace and they try and get it off the last owners. Then you can make a quick R 1k + or - from just holding onto the key
Or if you decide to buy it back yourself and fix it then the key is lost as you gave it with the car...

Just keep the keys.

Yup, don't throw them away.

I suppose on modern cars with transponders inside the keys it is even more of a hassle if you don't have the keys.

It wasn't actually me driving, it was my 19 year old brother-in-law (he has his licence for 3 months). Begged me for the car to go buy cigarettes then ended up driving into someone's wall. He knew the people so they were cool enough to not make him pay as they were in the process of breaking down the wall anyway. They were to start doing renovations a week later.
