over there..
Was in an accident on sat morning and damaged my car quite badly, haven't spoken to the insurance yet as they only open mon to fri.
I have a Hyundai Getz 2006 model. Damage is as follows;
Back passenger door dented in
Front driver door not opening
Right fender damaged both headlights broken
Bonnet damaged
Front bumper in pieces
Left fender also slightly damaged
Windscreen cracked.

So , any idea if the car will Britten off, or will they fix it . Book value of car is around 50k.

Thanks

The damage doesn't sound that bad to warrant the car being written off.

Everything you've listed can easily be repaired/replaced.

Also keep in mind that while the panel beater might quote you a large amount for the repairs, your insurance company will always manage to lower the quote.

From what you've said, I would estimate the damage between R20K and R30K, perhaps even less, unless there's damage to the chassis.

How did the accident happen?

Yip how did accident happen?

Also doesn't sound bad enough to be written off, pics?

I suppose now it will need to be fixed before you can get your Audi :p

@D3x dude you have no idea how the timing of all this is freaking me out!

Was driving back home late evening / very early morning, closed my eyes for like a second, then lost control of the car, ( with help from the crap roads covered in loose gravel) and drove into a tree..

Will post some pics later.

Dude closed your eyes? Were you tired?

Pics will help others say if write off or not, remember though there can be a whole lot of damage that you can't see.

Have you reported it?

Yip,

he better go to the cops soon if he has not been yet. Tomorrow might be to late. Each insurance has a time limit in which it must be reported or they don't pay.

& honestly him saying he can't get his insurance on the weekend. If it's a bigger company I don't see why not.

About 2 years ago I needed help & was stuck on the side of the road at about 7pm. I called & they sent a tow truck. They also called me every few mins 'til the guy arrived. Then later called to make sure I was home. (got the car towed home).

& all that coz of a cracked fuel pipe worth a few rand.

I assume that you are fine after the accident?

The car will be written of if:
1. The repair is more than abut 70% of the current value of the car
2. The chassis is bent and beyond repair

If the damage is not great, a few doors, bonnet etc and a new coat of paint, they will repair it.

As it was a self accident, they will look at the car and the accident more closely. If they find anything not within the law, they will not pay for the damage, e.g. tyres were not legal, blood alcohol was high (not saying that this is the case), you were talking on your cellphone, etc. Don't give them an excuse.

Suggest to the panel beater where the car is currently that they are better of writing off the car. Ask him (or her) is opinion first before making the suggestion. What might happen is that the panel beater may buy the car from the insurer if it is written off.

Good luck ... remember that you will be liable for your excess.

If I were you I'd remove any/all details from this thread before your insurer decides to browse a bit. :)

Good luck! Never a nice thing to go through.

Did you report it straight away? They going to think you were pissed if it was an early morning..

Sleeping and diving is not a good idea. Count yourself luck for only hitting a tree. My mom's friend ended in the incoming lane and now she is in a wheel chair :-( Mind you,she completely stopped drinking and going to every "all night" party she knew about. I hope you come right with the insurance. Don't mention a word about drinking. A single statement from anyone who saw you, will give them the reason not to pay! And yes, they go out of their way not to pay out. Ask me all about it. Apparently they act in their clients interests. WTF

Oh dear, sorry to hear that! :(

I guess the story about a Residual and the Audi now slips into the background.....

As for writing a car off, I've seen some amazing rebirths of some cars, and also some that didn't look so bad that were written off. Looking at pictures won't help us...only an assessor can decide in the end.

Hopefully there will be a happy ending to all this...at least you are around to tell us the story!

Thanks alot guys, just after it happened I called the police department and they said I must just come in the morning. So early sat morning I went in and opened an accident report , still can't get ahold of my insurance, but spoke to a work colleague, and he said that Monday morning should be fine to report it to them.
Will post pics and report in on status of the case.
Thanks again guys.

I find it bizzare that you can't get hold of your insurance company?

Who you with? Frik's short term insurance?

My Son had an accident around 4 months ago. I saw the photos that he sent (I was away) and I thought to myself 'Not too bad'. Well the vehicle written off as the insurance said it was too expensive to repair. The assessor said that the damage was actually not that bad and that the panelbeaters will most likely buy it from the insurance and have it back on the road within a few weeks at around a third of the cost.

This alone is an indication that your car will be scrapped.
It was hit on the passenger side and your driver door doesn't open. Just means the whole frame of the car which includes the support beams have taken a heavy knock and will not be cost effective to repair.

Another cause could also be due to the right fender damage - this sometimes happen with front impact which causes the fenders to move and obstruct opening the door.

Just an update, car has been deemed beyond economical means to repair, so just have to wait fir the assessor from the insurance to have a look... Sigh, it was my first car..

The insurance company might still repair your car.

Basically the panel beater will inflate the amount on the quotation with a couple of thousand rand but the assessor will in most cases easily deduct R10K to R20K (or more) from the total amount of the quote.

Why don't you post some photos of the car?
