Will my pc handle this display card?

5830 is bad value for money. Rather this:

Well, since you haven't given any specs at all, I can't say.

I can tell you that the 5830 is not a good buy though. It draws more power under load than a 5850, and doesn't provide particularly great performance for its price. I'd rather go for a GTX460 (link) or save up a little more for a 5850.

I don't know the specs of my psu out of my head so I was hoping that someone would be able to tell wether the newer card uses the same power or more than the 8800gt.

The board is a asus p5b-vm


So the GTX460 is much better than the 5830? Does it use the same power as the 8800?
 
Look you're going to have to give us your PSU specs. But I can tell you if you have r2k ish to spend a gtx460 is a MUCH better bet than a 5830 - Prophecy has them for around 2k now.
 
If his PSU handled a 8800GT It will handle a 5850 or GTX 460. 450 - 500w you'll be safe

EDIT: as long as it's not a Odin PSU :p

8800GT uses around 105W, 5830 175W, GTX460 1GB 160W, and GTX460 768MB 150W. This is all at stock, non-overclocked settings under max load. I don't know how accurate these numbers are in real world testing, but both cards will use at least 50% more power, and also extra amperage. They also both need 2 x 6-pin PCIE power connecters vs only 1 for the 8800GT.

edit: something I didn't mention: both the 5830 and GTX460 are double-slot cards vs the 8800GT being a single slot card, so make sure that you have an open slot below your 8800GT.

What does it mean if the display card says PCI-E 2.0?

for eg. on this page it shows the 8800 as having "PCI-E x16" and the gtx460 as having "PCI-E 2.0 x16". Does this mean that the motherboard must also support PCI-E 2.0?

On my mobo's page here it only says "1 x PCI-E x16".

Do I need to upgrade my mobo?
 
No, you don't need to upgrade. The 8800GT is also PCIE 2.0, which is backwards compatible with previous versions (except in rare cases of PCIE 1.0a motherboards with old bios's). That board should be PCIE 1.1, since it uses a 965 chipset, iirc.
 
The most important thing here, that nobody is mentioning is, check that your case is big enough! I had an 8800GT and was gonna get a GTS250 to replace it, only to find that they are huge and it would not have fitted. Likewise with the 5 Series Ati's. So get dimensions and check.

Not really. There was some stupid drama in another thread involving people jumping to conclusions and claiming it wouldn't stop your PC from blowing up, etc...
 
Normal Odin PSUs are total rubbish - GT Odins are decent though. I had a 585w Odin go on me with just a gtx260. Not to mention the total lack of connectors.

I also speak out of experience on my Aerocool case.Had to cut a hole on the HDD racks for my power connectors to fit....
 
odin is crapbecause its rated at its max power not itspower it can deliver 24/7, and they tend to brake.

dont get the card get gtx 460 or 5850. gtx 460 is cheaper also
