Will this Farmer also get away with murder?

Anyone trying to shoot something further than 10m away with a 38 special has no intention of actually hitting anything

Are you sure you don't mean a 100m, even at 10m a bullet from a 38 could probably still do damage?

Why does this make headline news. There are countless black on white murders EVERY DAY. Double standards IMO!

Guys why are you still arguing about this.

NO MAN EVER WILL SHOOT A CHILD FOR FUN !

STOP TRYING TO MAKE AN ISSUE OUT OF IT.

Rule 4 of handling a firearm: Be certain of your target, and what is beyond it.

The chap was expecting baboons, and thus fired believing they were exactly that. Erroneously, as it turns out.

Ah, you must be thinking of those silly self-defense 5-shot Astra/Rossi guns. I assure you, it's more than possible for a good shooter to hit something approximately the size of a baboon at 100m with a .38. Ask anyone who does Silhouette shooting. Also consider that he was firing at what he thought were a troop of baboons... target-rich environment means more chance of a shot landing in one of them.

Firing shots in the air is never a good idea. It's unpredictable where they'll come down. Besides, while a handgun can be heard at 100m, the report might not be enough. Couple it with flying chunks of lead, possible injuries and damage to surrounding flora, and you have a good deterrent.

Uh... different case?

The guy made a mistake... **** happens...

Unfotunately the boy died. NO MAN EVER WILL SHOOT A CHILD JUST BECAUSE ! NO NEVER !.... EVEN THESE ANIMALS WE HAVE RAPING AND KILLING OUR PEOPLE DON'T KILL THE KIDS.

Was the person involved in this case a child? Didn't see that anyway. IMO you have to be even more sick to rape a child than you do to shoot one but that's just me, both are clearly just disgusting and wrong.

When did this become about the killing of farmers? I have always been for the right of people to protect themselves, however this farmer and several others, have not said they felt threatened in any way. All I'm saying is that you look at the regular occurance of this situations and ask yourself what may be the reason? Irresponsible gun-use? Intentional shooting of these people?
How many others? I know this one guy has received a lot of press in the last year or longer but you say this is a regular occurrence so you must have a number. I'd just be interested in what it is.

What were these people doing on the farm? If they were a) not supposed to be on the farm, and b) there was a chance that baboons were in the vicinity, then this is a clear cut case of mistaken identity and a horrible, tragic accident resulted. end of story.

I don't buy that but that's just my opinion. Since when does one shoot at trespassers, whether they be animals or humans?

since farmer killings have become a national sport <for some>

Since your farm takes a loss every time they destroy produce or harm animals. Baboons are destructive and mischievous. A class-a nuisance. Seen a good chunk of a farmer's watermelon crop destroyed by baboons. There goes the profit margin.

At that same farmer's place, we rode around the farm once a day in the bakkie with a rifle, and the farmboys took shots at any baboons they saw.

Speak when you know what you're talking about, please.

Also, for anyone who doesn't think .38s are accurate:
A 2" snubnose revolver, and
a variety of guns shot off-hand - including a few .38s.

It shows what you knows.

It is extremely difficult to shoot with a .38 special.

Errrrmm... 15 yards? that's not much more than 10m dude. And this is someone who appears to have lots of practice and plenty time to take his shot

The 38 special / snubnose is known for it's ease of use not it's accuracy. I'm sure you'll find competition shooters out there who could hit a fairly distant target regularly but your average man in the street has little chance performing the same feat, especially in the "heat of the moment".

You did notice the other targets, right? .38 can be shot out of a revolver designed for .357 magnum, and .38 revolvers themselves are not limited to snubnose. A longer barrel means better accuracy and better performance at long range.

My first time shooting silhouette was after I'd been shooting for only 3 months. Still managed to hit a target less than half the size of a man at 150m with a dead standard Taurus .357 magnum revolver. Don't believe Hollywood.

Getafix: the .38 is a pussycat round, it's just the fact that it's most often shot out of snubbies that makes it seem snappy. It's dead easy to shoot out of a decent revolver.

Ed: oh, and 15 yards is about 14 meters. Not 100, but not 10 either. :)
Ed2: In case my point wasn't entirely clear: .38 special is a caliber, not a type of weapon. The caliber itself is very accurate.

Sort of :-)

Shorter barrels are inherently more accurate, all other things being equal (which they never are). A long barrel vibrates more, throwing the shot off. On the other hand, a long barrel (think rifle) gives better velocity.

Back to revolvers, a longer barrel gives a longer sight radius, so it's easier to line up the sights. But experiments using a mechanical jig known as a Ransom rest showed marginally better accuracy with shorter barrels.

The "better performance at long range" bit is because of the better velocity you can get from a longer barrel.

The caliber itself is very accurate.

The 38 Special is known as one of the most accurate handgun rounds, yes.

Well, yes, but that goes for 9mm and 22 and 50BMG for what it's worth. Don't blame the 38. (If you edited the sentence to "The snubnose is known..." I'd agree with you :-)
