Don't be too sure - the guy who taught me to hunt and got me through my certification used to hunt bear (amongst other game) with a revolver.

I stand by my point, if someone is on your property illegally you should be able to shoot them. They are there for one reason. Especially on a farm.

Exactly, with a gun like maybe a .44 Mag, you could hunt a tank.

Well, well, it seems this particular farmer has a few ANC buddies up his sleeve, and they are willing to testify for him! Even if the events transpired the way he describes them, it is still IMO very irresbonsible to be just shooting at the bush with no clear sight of what you are shooting at. What if it was one of his kids playing around in the veld?

But please bear in mind how absolutely terrified most farmers are nowadays with all the farm killings and all.
My inlaws stay on a farm and I will never just go there unannounced.

There is everyday black and white people killed in this country for now reason at all and the animals who did it, did it with doing it on purpose and getting a kick out of it.
In the case of the white farmer, he chased away baboons (firing shots)destroying his land. Why all of a sudden after treating this people with respect and helping them out, he would go out and shoot them?

Just curious but did u see the farmer cant be a racist since he is an ANC supporter now instead of accepting accountability for your statement you call somebody else names ?

Elephant has been taken in south africa with a handgun. As have cape buffalo and most antelope. Okay, I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than .454 Casull if you're out for elephant, but still

Dude, were talking about a .38 revolver. Sure if the guy had lions (though I wouldnt try it) or an elephant (missing is much harder), sure, then lets "justify hunting with a revolver", but he had baboons. Though he says he was just trying to scare them. Also the baboons I know run when they see people (farm ones get shot at, town ones get fed)... strange the person who got shot was so close to them.
Strangely enough weve had almost every type of hunter on our farms, rifle, crossbow, compound bow and such. I have never had someone ask us to hunt with a revolver.
I can understand how some PH`s might use it for the thrill, but I havent come across someone.
And I am sure if they do hunt with a revolver... its not a .38 special.

You're right, a .38 isn't among the top choices. However, I wasn't defending this guy as a hunter, just saying it can be done. Handgun hunters don't shoot from the bakkie, and they stalk much, much closer.
Also, .38 has killed plenty of humans, so why not shoot something approximately human-sized with it? Oh, and an elephant may be harder to miss, but getting a killing shot on one is much less easy...
