Hi all!

I am looking to buy a new GPU and will need a new PSU then as well.

The GPU I am looking at is the Club 3d RoyalKing R9 290
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b2867/club-3d-r9-290-royalking.html

and the PSU is the Cooler Master B700
http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/b-series/b700/

I have alreayd done my research and have decised on these two if they can work together. I do not know PSU's very well so just want to make sure this one has what is needed for this GPU. Not actually sure if they have different things from one PSU to the next but yeah.

I see it has the following connections:

1x ATX 20/24pol, 1x ATX12V 4+4pol, 4x PCI Express 6+2pol, 1x 3.5 Zoll, 3x 5.25 Zoll, 6x SATA

and it is 12V which is what I need for this GPU right?

If anybody could let me know if this would work that would be great!

Thanks!

This is an entry- mid range PSU wouldn't touch it with a pogo stick, even with rabies shots...rather have a look at corsair, antec, seasonic, be quite just to name a few, and pending rest of the system specs, as they do apply, the other hardware also uses 12volt combined with the GPU.

Considering the GPU wants nearly half what the PSU can offer and that it is a craptastic PSU, I expect a new thread 6 months down the line help PC restating for no reason...

600w is what is recommended for a R9290.
This one is more and gets good reviews. I dont quote understand what the problem is then? Just the brand?

Is this one better then even though its only 600w?

A Radeon R9-290 needs at least 31 A on the 12 V rail, that B700 can deliver 55 A so it's fine

EDIT: Removed

Yes. It's pretty good.

Just ignore this silly post by wizardofid. he knows fokol.

If this is the same wizardofid that used to be on carbonite it would be funny, as far as I can remember that wizardofid actually reviewed power supplies for a website somewhere or something to that regard.

It's not a bad PSU but it's by no means a good PSU.

That being said, it will work just fine.

Dude what I have forgotten about PSU's you still need to learn boy ;)

@theHAYwired1
That would be the one and only, Oj0 which also reviews hardware, will pretty much tell you, stay far away from entry and mid range coolermaster PSU's. Bad ripple on any entry/Mid range PSU with questionable Caps, is nearly guaranteed to kill GPU memory and HDD's on a whim....

@ DarkSpectre So have a cup of STHU ;)

@Electric, yes most likely be fine, pending the rest of the system specs, if he has water cooling for example, it would be totally inappropriate.... It's neither suited to OCing as well, too many unkown variables...I can say with confidence, using this PSU with such a beast of a GPU will result in either hardware failure, or a busted PSU in the next year.

Your spending gods knows what on a GPU, you would think people would get a proper PSU suited to high end GPU's ect.

I fully agree with you wizard.
I am a Seasonic fan boy through and through.

I should have said it will work but for how long and at the expense of what component.

I've googled to verify what you claim about the entry/mid level Coolermaster PSUs. Looks like you are right. I would like to apologize for being so **** :(

At least I now know not to buy one of those PSUs in the future. Thanks for the heads-up :)

Awesome! Seems like I've got the right guys in this thread.

How about this one then? I'm trying to keep the cost down on this but this one gets a very good review for a cheaper psu :

750 Watt Corsair CX Series Non-Modular 80+ Bronze
1x ATX 20/24pol, 1x ATX12V 4+4pol, 2x PCI Express 6+2pol, 1x 3.5 Zoll, 6x 5.25 Zoll, 8x SATA

Edit: I'm actually looking at the modular one.

CX is okay for basic systems, great otherwise, Would push for TX or GS even HX if that is out of you price range, Antec gaming series is the next step...... but CX would be just fine just be aware no ocing or no WC.

@DarkSpectre No problem :)

I have my CPU slightly OC'd.
It's a i5 4670k and I have it on 4.2ghz

Would the CS 750 model be much better?

Ok ok... bread and water the next month it is...

This looks like the one:

Antec HCG-750M
http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story9&reid=357

This will work with that GPU right?

Lol bread and water , yip :p HCG much better than the CX or CS

However this is the one I have on my rig for the last year http://www.uprice.co.za/p/Raidmax-RX-850AE-850W-PSU/8872958/ step up from the CX and GS on par maybe slightly below the HCG...If you really strapped for cash consider getting XFX 850 black edition

Cant find the Raidmax from the place I'm getting my things unfortunately.

They have this XFX one as well:

750 Watt XFX XXX Edition Modular 80+ Bronze
It's about R200 cheaper than that Antec.

Better option?
