I would love to use iMessage across the board as well.

The primary reason we don’t is there is no desktop client and always someone without a Mac in the mix somewhere.

Edits are marked as edited so it’s a non-issue. Forum example as a moderator is disingenuous and not applicable anyway.

FWIW Mods have the same time limit when it comes to edits - have a look ;)

I'm only on one (work related) WA group fortunately - my kids' school seems to discourage them.

Propose that everybody change to Telegram. It's better for Groups anyways.
 
A few weeks from now most will have forgotten about this and will be using WhatsApp as before.

Wonder if all the people joining Telegram deleted WhatsApp and their Facebook accounts now, but I doubt it...

Telegram just seems so needy when they insist on announcing whenever someone you know joins. Blocking that "feature" meant removing all access to my contacts so it's pretty much a useless app now.
 
I don't have issues with Telegram as such (it has some great features in and among its annoyances), but ditching WhatsApp for Telegram if you are concerned with privacy is a bit disingenuous. Telegram chats aren't end-to-end encrypted by default, and group chats aren't encrypted at all (if I understand correctly).

Telegram is also at its root an advertising company, and though its business model differs from that of Facebook / WhatsApp in a number of fairly important technical points, but in the end, they use data in similar ways to what Facebook does. Others such as Signal, Threema, Wire or Wickr don't have this problem, they have entirely different models.

So to me it seems like deciding you don't like German cars, ditching your VW, and buying an Opel instead.
 
Yeah, will continue using WhatsApp. What they do with user data doesn't bother me.

Personally feel the commotion around the update of WhatsApp's privacy policy is fake news; most tech giants already collect user data and use it to determine what tickles your fancy on their platforms. Its nothing new, at least WhatsApp is letting people know upfront.
 
WhatsApp and FB are just information harvesting tools. YOU are the product if something is free.

I have moved over to Telegram and Signal years ago.

You would have enjoyed the last 72 hours.... It's quite annoying but super interesting as a means to gauge trends...
 
I've been using Telegram for ages now and convinced a few people to install it, most ignored me but these past few days I've had a crazy number of notifications of people joining telegram

Use the tool to check which advertisers have access to track and use your data.
You can opt out and use the ProtectMyChoices Chrome extension to save your preferences.

Just by checking how many companies have auto access is shocking.

Then the issue is that only 'some' companies have agreed to the aboutads service. There's hundreds out there that haven't.

IMHO, from experience. This is lose lose situation.
 
I’ve been using iMessage as my primary for a while with WhatsApp being my secondary for those without iPhones. Telegram is now my secondary and I’ll wait until WhatsApp deletes my account before I delete the app myself.

Thank you, I have just used it to tune my pi-hole, NoScript, Privacy Badger, UBlock and Ghostery settings.

Lol. If the thank you is legit, cool. If not, those apps should give some performance hits, not so?

I also use Adblock on my Chrome install.
Even with that active, the tracking and sharing is still active, until you opt out.

It's legit. :thumbsup:

I don't use Chrome (for external browsing).
 
I'm not sure how people think the latest WhatsApp changes will impact them. Surely if you are planning to blow something up or steal a Pierneef painting you do not broadcast that over social media platforms ....

If you use a computer or a mobile phone, someone is collecting info from you.

The only way to stop this is to start sending mail via the Post Office and call with a Telkom land line. You are safe in knowing that both these companies' work force simply is not capable of recording anything.

Ok, now read your post again but this time emphasis on "YOU are the product if something is free."

How is Telegram and Signal better if its also free?
