I apologise for being a bit ignorant, but do you guys know if WiMax is available in Rustenburg ?

Where can I see / find out coverage for WiMax?

Also, the main reason I am checking into this is I want Wireless Internet for Online GAMING.

From your guys experience, have someone tried playing games online with WiMax? For example, can someone tell me what the latency is on it on Counterstrike Source (on IS and SGS servers). Also Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, as the server is overseas, do you guys have problems connecting to it?

As for the equipment and type of connection...
What is the cost for the equipment needed?
What is common download and upload speeds?
Also, with the connection, will you be able to do things such as port forwarding, because with my current WISP I have several NAT errors, mainly with CNC3. Also, will everyone have a shared same IP ? Meaning in CSS playing on one server, when other people from the same ISP plays, it will tell me sometimes the IP is shared, so I can't spectate.

All of these factors make me unhappy with my current WISP, all the people complaining about GWI, please don't, these guys I use have the worst service EVER. Telkom are 150% better than them, and we all know how bad that is.

Go to the doBroadband website. Click on products at the top-right corner. Then click on "do Broadband Wireless" on the left.

- R490 installation
- R240 p/m (excludes bandwidth)
- 512k

You can use any ADSL account on WiMax. Regarding latencies, afaik if you have a good signal it's pretty much the same as ADSL.

No coverage in Rustenburg at this stage.

Please note that the WiMAX service cannot be guaranteed as it is dependant on Line of site and distance from the tower.

Hi rvanwyk, thanks alot!

Pity is that here is no coverage yet. :(

But, just on my other questions regarding latencies / stability, can some people please give more specific information please. If it is good for gaming or not... while I wait lol :(

I'm sure someone will give you more info.

As far as I know, the WiMax link basically replaces the copper so latencies are the same as ADSL. Obviously this will also depend on the adsl account you use (on adsl and wimax); shaped or unshaped, etc.

Thanks again, that sounds promising... but only people using it will tell if its worth it or not.

Anyway I just checked the 3G coverage map of Vodacom, and I noticed Vodacom do have a small patch of coverage in Rustenburg.. Luckily for me I am in that patch.

So yet another question , what exactly is the difference between Vodacom's WiMax and Telkom WiMax? Only ISP or what? So if I for instance get the one from whichever company, will I be able to use it with the other one also?

Just swopping accounts or not that simple/?

I doubt that you will be able to swop accounts between the two. Telkom uses a central RADIUS server for autentication on ADSL and WiMax but Vodacom will use their own. I also doubt that Vodacom will have WiMax in your area as they are still busy with the trials, afaik.

At least you have 3G (and perhaps HSDPA) coverage. Not too bad for gaming in some cases. I played C&C Generals on a 3G/HSDPA connection using an openVPN link between my house (JHB) and a friend's in Cape Town and it wasn't laggin or dropping connections at all.

I had 3G HSDPA and well its another fail of Wireless technology, download speeds at 1600kbps (HSDPA) or more, still ping was worse than 200 on local CSS servers... and thats when I understood that high speed is not necesseraly good for gaming ...

After all this problems with my current WISP and also Vodacom 3G HSDPA, I still try to go get decent wireless, omw I still don't learn :'(

Anyway I am trying to phone the local Vodashop but well they don't answer.... fail again lol.

Hi CVRChameleon,

I used to live in rtb as well and recently moved to jhb! WiMax is the best. I honestly can tell the difference between adsl and my wimax connection. The only drawback of Wimax is the speed, but i use it for gaming anyway.

Thanks Sharkbait

Lol, ok it was confusing when I first read, can and then can't tell difference... but I get it.

Yes thats good news that ping times are same as ADSL :), I want to use it for gaming mainly also....

Sorry I should have mentioned that I do not have the option of ADSL, I am renting, so .....

Strange then that the Vodacom 3G coverage map shows WiMax coverage in my area....

Will try to find out from Telkom as well.

The place where you are renting, does it have a telephone line?

I am renting as well and the place where I am renting, doesn't have a phone line, but we make arrangements with our landlord. We would install the line and pay for it, but when we
leave, we cancel the line... Well, we got the wimax now and that is easy to move.

Maybe you should move to JHB as well... :-)

Well thats why think WiMax will be easier, I don't want to have landlord problems to cancel the ADSL later on lol.

I have applied for WiMax trial in my area from Vodacom...... LOL I am waiting for them to contact me & tell me that it is not available here.., wonder how their 3G map has it on .....

Well let me wait and see,

@SharkBait, moving to JHB, if there is a very good job opportunity, yes then I may move there :D

I miss the place, but I won't get the same money... :-(

What I was meaning, if you don't intent to move, then you can get the ADSL then...
