WiMax Information Guide

See if they'd said safety concerns I'd say ok.

But they're not saying that and that is my problem. I take extreme umbridge to being lied too. Particularly since I've been waiting for Telkom for almost a year now to install some kind of broadband service.

Well apparently rain isn't as big an issue as i got told because I just got phoned and told they'll be installing tomorrow rain or shine.

Well the guy came and installed. Apparently my only tower option is 9km's away and prognosis didn't look good.
Thankfully I managed to get signal, quite good signal strength actually, and they finished the install.
Despite heavy rain I was getting reasonable download speeds and WoW gives me a stable 300ms ping on my unshaped account.
I finally have broadband after 10 months of complaining.

COOOL! im glad for you.

im still waiting though. only 5 months now. so, am i halfway there? :-)

Just a little but off topic here -> WoW :

Is 300ms ping for WoW good enough? I've only ever played Warcraft and Age of Empires online before, but now I want to give WoW a try.....even if it's just the demo.

I have a full strength WiMAX installation and I ping international servers at anything between 200-400ms...will this suffice?

I just don't want to go and waste 3.2Gb cap (the size of the trial version) on downloading and installing something that might not even be playable.

300ms is very good ping for South Africa. We'll always be at a disadvantage to overseas players but a lot of guys play at 800-1000ms here so 300 is just damn peachy.

If it only takes 10 months then I shouldv'e had DSL by now. Maybe they forgot about me still waiting after 14 months.

USEFUL info

from http://www.do.co.za/broadband/index.html

WiMAX is a fixed wireless broadband connection as opposed to mobile wireless, WiMAX offers broadband over a radius not greater than 30km from the WiMAX tower.

The WiMAX customer will receive similar access to an ADSL subscriber, as the indoor unit determines the range of the signal the same way an ADSL Wifi enabled modem does.

Where Telkom cannot offer a DSL or do broadband package due to the exchange area that you reside in not being ADSL enabled you will be offered a WiMAX based solution instead.

If your area is not DSL enabled, please call 10217 so that we can see if your area is covered by the WiMAX footprint.

WiMAX up to 512kbps Access R240
Installation R490

If you reside in one of the areas listed below and cannot get ADSL then chances are we can provide you with WiMAX:

Midrand area

Please note that the WiMAX service cannot be guaranteed as it is dependant on Line of site and distance from the tower.

Western Region? Mmm, i stay in Durbanville which doesn't seems listed and i'm on WiMax.

Guess the simplest solution is, if you can see a Telkom Communications Tower, then you should be able to get WiMax?

No.
Telkom has way too many Towers in South Africa to have installed equipment on them yet.

I live 22km from a proposed new tower site (Windy Hill) in a town 70km from PMB. Will I have to be in LOS from that tower to get reception and service?

If you can see Tygerberg Hill you should be fine. The WiMAX base station for the Durbanville/Kraaifontein/Brackenfell area is uo there.

DAMMMMMMMMITTTTTTTTT

Phoned f#$ng Telkom 7 times yesterday no B$ each time i get told to dial 1021home then 1021bizniss for WIMAX am in the dam footprint. Yesterday probably after my 5th call i get thru to a guy that tells me that Telkom will not be installing landline lines as they did a feasibility and it would cost them a couple of hundred thousand to lay landline cables as the builders who built the houses built the pipes closed where they need to put the copper through or whatever. So I asked now why do they still need to check the area if they have done the survey and concluded that there won’t be any landline then called in again a supervisor is suppose to phone this morning and am still waiting..

I love it when Telkom says it's "too expensive" to install. This coming from a company that made a R5 billion profit last year...

They said the same thing to me that installation of a DSLAM is too expensive, therefore i have WiMax now :)

yipppppeeeeeeee

Got my order and action number...now guys who does the WIMAX installation in Cape Town so i could start a fire under their asses so long?
