Telkom Alvarion WiMAX

Hi ,

Can someone tell me where I can download a manual for this device ?

I would like to know what type of connection it provides on the WAN interface.

Is it an RJ11 like the Telkom ADSL or is it RJ45 Ethernet ?

Is the connection device like an ISDN NTU -- in other words you connect some kind of routing device to it if you want to run more than just ONE PC.

I assume that if it was RJ11 you could hook up one of the ADSL type routers

These are the docs I found on the Alverion site

WHITE PAPERS

& here as well

DATA SHEETS

Searching through that lot for an actual dedicated User Manual. Anyone got a short cut ?

Thanks

Some Idle WiMAX thoughts

What I'm not getting is if I *have* to connect using PPPoE dial-up, or if I can connect multiple PC's as you normally would through the router?:p

Just some idle thoughts......

The CPE-IDU as supplied by TELKOM is a BRIDGING device. There is a seperate Network Gateway CPE-IDU available from Alverion. However to my mind NONE of these devices is a TRUE router.

It looks like the routing is done on the base station

PPPoE must be handled on each PC seperately

I have seen some of these "Routers" that hitch up to so called ADSL "Modems" that use Rj45 as the transport medium.

When I talk "ROUTER" I mean CISCO which as far as I know does not come with an RJ45 WAN interface ( which is really a LAN technology )

HOW does POTS become VOIP

Any of the propellor heads and rocket scientists prepared to explain the signalling on the Physical Layer. ie what are the cables , pinouts and electrical signalling on the Alverion RJ45 WiMAX as compared to a DSL RJ11

Who knows maybe there is a converter

Anyone from the MWEB trial here to tell us exactly what equipment they used and how they set it up ?????

Its ethernet.
You plug it into an Ethernet port.
Its not DSL.

The Alverion IDU has two RJ45 ports. One goes to the WiMax antenna (Power over ethernet) and the other connects to your LAN.

The IDU doesnt need to be connected to a WAN port on a router, a normal switch will work find if you want to split the connection to multiple PCs.

You dont even have to setup gateway and DNS addresses on your PC's IP settings!

Create PPPoE dial-up and bob's your uncle.

so is the ordering of adsl first really that important? or can i just simply go to telkom and order wimax? i went to a telkom direct store yesterday and asked if i could order and they said i should fone 10210.. what number is that? should i call that number or 10217?

even if its for residential? i called 10217 and they said they would transfer me to someone that could help, and was then told by the automated voice thing that it would be an estimated 20 min till the call is answered, so i killed the call.. will try again nownow

after getting through on the 10217 number, and being cut off, and getting through again, the lady told me i couldnt have wimax as i have adsl available in the area! i dont want adsl because of the line rental and the wait, should i fone again and see if i get a different response?
