Hi Guys

I am looking for 2 X legal copies of an old version of Windows
prefer win 98 or ME. Need it for 2 kids from the township.
A few guys from my work are sponsoring these kids with 2nd hand PC's
so I want to do everything legal..

PM me if you have anything..

Thanks
DD

dude just put a pirate version of man

microsoft dont support nor do they sell windows 98

its for poor okes, just give them the pirate stuff if you have no choice :) doubt microsoft will even care about it

check the Junk Mail...

but MS support for Win98/ME ended last year.

in effect it can be considered in the abandonware category (Developer no longer sells or supports the software). MS may still consider it a violation of license to use it illegally, but any prosecution or investigation is very slim.

Personally, if you cannot find any copies under R100.00, I would have no qualms with downloading a couple of keys for it from the internet and installing it on their computers. The likelihood of those keys still being in use is extremely low.

I phoned microsoft and explained what I am doing and they said no
I must get legal copy...even for win 98 .can you believe it..

Eish even for kids there is no help.I was thinking of going the edubuntu route.

Of course they are going to say that. If they said it was legal all those poor sods who bought Windows Vista would uninstall it and put 98 back on for free! :p

Seriously dude. As long as you have separate keys for each installation, MS is going to do diddly squat about it. And Win98 does not have activation, so MS would never disable their computers. Its not like they are going to have internet access anyway.

Having said that though... I put Windows 95 on a little old laptop of mine and gave it to the maid's son for Christmas. a few months later he brought it back not working. He had tried to install Windows XP on it. It was a Pentium 1 with 32 Megs of RAM.

Install Edubuntu! It's FREE and more stable, and works better and and and... eradicate Micro$oft for ever!!!

Linux ftw!!

AMAGAD!! WTFGHYAS!!

i r scared of the linux man.... *runs away*

I see you are using the virus called Windows. Stupidity usually stops when it gets to Windows and becomes another word....

Linux has never intimidated anyone. Except of course beings that shouldn't be using computers :D

I downloaded a ISO of Win98 SE and loaded it on Virtual PC 2007 - it populated the OEM number automatically! What is illegal about that then?

@DD1313 - PM me if you're interested - I'll Zip & upload the Win98 SE CAB files for you to a local FTP server, together with the product key Virtual PC 2007 gives you so that you can load it on those PC's.

Errr... it probably is infected with spyware

And it still is illegal - unless M$ says otherwise.

If the cd key is automatically populated and you downloaded it, it means one thing.... illegal....

One day I just wanna go and bust some M$ piraters.... just for the fun of it.

Copying copyrighted software is illegal - unless it is done with the consent of the original software producer.

There is no way around that. And it doesn't help to use the excuse of "abandonware" for some software packages either - if the original producer does not give permission, then you don't have permission to copy it.

In the case of Spectrum games, found on www.worldofspectrum.org, the site hosting the game had to remove a couple of games, including Alien 8, KnightLore, etc as the original producer did not give permission for these games to be distributed.

Other producers, however, gave their permission that their games be freely copied and downloaded even though the games was copyrighted.

So, unless the original producer gives consent, it will be viewed as piracy. And that is a fact.

Ubuntu along with OpenOffice. Free, no licensing issues, and in general no real headaches.

I've unfortunately gotten rid of my 95 and 98 CDs, so I can't help out with legal copies. Check bidorbuy as well, sort of our local ebay :D

Why, if I use one of our client's original holgraphic Win98 CD's in MS VPC 2007, does it populate the the same product key?

EDIT: VPC 2004 SP1 populates a different key which, if I type it in the VPC 2007 session, also works

Interesting...

Ubuntu does not really run well / is not recommended on anything less than a 1 ghz processor and 512 mb of RAM. And if I have any of those laying around my house... I would still use them! :p
