Win8/WP8 Rumor Mill... Post It Here!

Nokia Patents Photo Sensor to Give PureView without the Hump

While Nokia files a patent for a smaller sensor giving fans hope that a normal looking phone with a 41MP PureView camera (i.e. without the abominable hump as on the Nokia 808) is on its way, fans will have to wait sometime before that happens.

Windows 8 is a ''No Compromise'' ecosystem!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

This guy gets the Win8 vision.

The problem that I have always had with existing tablets is that they are just not what I had expected them to be. I am so glad that I did not rush into buying a tablet - as hip and trendy as they are. Sense prevailed.

With Win8 now fully documented it is clear that my expectations will be fulfilled. Bill Gates was entirely correct. This is not a post-PC era, it is a PC+ era. Ergonomics, economics and the need for productivity dictate this.

Take the Samsung Ativ Smart PC (hybrid) tablet recently announced at IFA 2012 as an example. I thought I needed a tablet with a cover keyboard only, but really, what I need is a tablet with a proper keyboard, USB connections, an ethernet port and a cover/touchtype keyboard. All this you get with a Win8 tablet ultrabook/laptop hybrid.

Oh! Lets not forget that I also need native Microsoft Office applications.

Ed Bott of ZDNet explains very well how Windows 8 is a ''No Compromise'' hardware and software ecosystem.

THE END OF ANDROID TABLETS:

If you still are not convinced that:
1. Current tablets fall far too short of everyday computing needs i.e they are not future proof,
2. That Windows 8 is a no compromise ecosystem or
3. That Windows 8 is the immediate future of modern day computing

then head on over to TheVerge's article on how inadequate non-Windows 8 tablets are and see what I am talking about.

PureView Stunt Snuffed Out - "Real Footage" Provided in Apology

Nokia's video showing how Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) works was not taken by a Lumia 920 PureView camera.

Nokia admited that the simulation video created confusion as to which camera was used to shoot the video of the girl on the bike ad after several journalists highlighted the fact that there was a shadow of a van with a TV camera following the two bikers in the ad leading to the suspicion that the footage in the video was not taken by a Lumia 920 camera as the public might have been led to by the ad.

Read the story here.

Here is the real PureView footage showing OIS.

Lumia 920 PureView Beats SIII & iPhone 4s Hands Down in Very Dark Lighting

A hands on demonstration of Lumia 920 PureView camera abilities pitted against the Samsung Galaxy SIII and Apple's iPhone 4s.

Pity there was no video comparison but the Lumia video looked very steady IMO.

Nokia Gives Full Apology for 'Fake' Video and Stills

To say that I was (still am) angered and disappointed by Nokia for dupping me into believing that the video of the girl on the bike and the stills taken at night were all taken by a PureView camera is an understatement.

This is something that I will not forgive Nokia for even though they have offered a full apology for both the video and still pictures.

However, this is not to say that I do not believe that their PureView camera doesn't do what they were trying to make us see it does. I just believe that they should not have misled us into believing that it is that good. It is good indeed, but not that good.

Here is their apology:

"For clarification, the first photo was shot by a bystander in Helsinki and apparently posted by them to the Internet. It shows the production set-up being used for the video for which we have apologized for not being transparent. Indeed, a Lumia 920 was not used to illustrate the benefits of optical image stabilization and we regret the error. The other still images in this post were extracted from that video. Again, we have posted an apology and the video is now clearly marked. We also posted images of the Lumia 920 being used in low light conditions yesterday. These images were taken in Central Park, the evening prior to our launch in New York, using a Lumia 920 prototype and no artificial lighting or stands, and a flagship smartphone from another manufacturer. Their authenticity is not in question. The same is true for the PureView photos on Nokia’s product pages" - Link - TheVerge.

Below are some images from Nokia's PureView website that they say are taken using a Lumia 920 camera, which are compared to a competitor's images:

Lumia 920 to Launch in Germany by mid-October 2012 (US 2 Nov '12)

While TheVerge and TechRadar corroborate the 2 November 2012 date for the launch of the Lumia 920 in the US, WMPowerUser brings us news that the phone will be selling in Germany by the middle of October this year.

Speculated pricing is as follows:
- Germany - 600 Euro ($758, £476) and
- Other European countries - 450 Euro ($568, £357) - two weeks later.
- This is in comparison to the SIII, which sells in the same markets for 580 Euro

Link - WMPowerUser.

Note: The German courts' pet peeve is a Samsung mobile phone. I think they are all banned there or at least one of their tablets is.

Nokia is definately going for competitive pricing.

Its a shame because just yesterday I saw a Lumia 900 being sold at Autopage for R379/mth while a Galaxy SIII was being sold for R299/mth. Nokia should really work on promoting its devices in SA.

Comparison: iPhone 5 (rumors), Nokia Lumias (WP8), Moto Droids

Screen-Shot-2012-09-06-at-16.14.33.jpg

Preliminary details seem to indicate that Nokia Lumia 920 is quite a distance ahead of this game, unless if Apple comes up with a rabbit out of the hat. I hear they will not have NFC meaning no wireless charging.

Have a look here.

From the leaks that I have seen so far, most of what has been used here is likely to be confirmed in the unveiling event on 12 September. If you don't know what that is then perhaps you just need go and watch Days of Our Lives or something right now. WWE Raw?

This time, Nokia is up against No. 1.

'Flame' - The Lowest End of Nokia WP8 So Far?

These guys churn out 'sibblings' like rabbits.

The 'Flame' looks like the lowest end of their WP8 offerings and is likely to have the following specs:
- A 4-inch
- 512MB RAM
- 1.0GHz dual-core processor
- 5-megapixel camera
- 4GB of storage.
- Optional microSD card

It is said to be the replacement to the Lumia 610 and/or 710.

I have a feeling this is not the end of Nokia's low end offering for WP8.

Lumia 920 on AT&T 21st Oct

images

They say we should take this with a pinch of salt and that what I will do.

Here is the full WMPowerUser version:

BGR reports via their trusted sources that AT&T will be launching the Nokia Lumia 920 on the 21st October.

The handset was rumoured for a 2nd November release in USA, following the official launch of Windows Phone 8 on October 29th, another rumoured date.

With so many rumours it should all be taken with a pinch of salt, but at most it seems Nokia’s flagship phone is only 5-6 weeks away. Link.
