After more than 15 years, the famous Winamp media player will shut down on December 20, its makers announced Wednesday.

The announcement itself was a whimper—a small banner notification on the Winamp website—rather than a bang, and the end seems sadly appropriate. The skinnable media player was all the rage at the turn of the century, but barely made a peep since being acquired by AOL in 1999.

After years of floundering, Winamp released Android and Mac versions in 2010 and 2011, respectively, but that appears to have been too little, too late.
The website notification warns Winamp users of its impending shutdown. (Click to enlarge.)

As Winamp ruled the days of Napster, iTunes and streaming media services such as Spotify and Pandora control the music scene of today. Winamp’s still got the skins, but it was just too niche in today’s cross-platform, pay-as-you-go world, though the software still reportedly made money right up until the end.

ArsTechnica has a superb, detailed look at Winamp’s fall from grace—a tumble that former Winamp honchos attribute to AOL mismanagement. If you can’t bear to leave the past behind, you have one more month to download the free Winamp media player before it shuffles into the annals of history.

Don’t forget to snag some skins and plug-ins while you’re at it. Because nostalgia.

I still use winamp daily on my windows 7 laptop.... and on my Samsung s3 mini.... Was looking recently for an ios version but to no avail.....

What I like about it, was that it never actually changed much over the years and did what it was told to.... play music!

I should use it ages ago... one of my first media players. It was shiny lol

That's going to be a really, really sad day. I love Winamp.
I've been using it for as long as I can remember, the only hit point for me was that it had no support on *nix.

I guess Clemintine will have to step up.

In my honest opinion, Winamp's downfall was exactly the fact that it changed so little over the years. A default installation resulted in a dated-looking piece of software. It always was a great media player, but for software to stay relevant, development (especially with regards to UI) needs to constantly be advancing.

Another nice feature was if you have a PC with multiple sound cards, you could choose which one you wanted to use for Winamp.

Downfall? Do you know the history of Winamp?

Nostalgia led me download winamp on my previous phone but since my new phone is a Sony had no need for it.

:( Good night, sweet prince. The Android version was never really done in my opinion, and Poweramp is better. But on Windows, nothing comes close. Been using it since at least 1998 and I've seen other players come and go. I guess the crazy price they were charging for the full version had something to do with it.

So what's the best alternative? Please don't say Windows Media Player. I hate that can.

One feature I'll miss about Winamp is the File Type Converter
