Winamp is officially dead

Used to use Winamp a lot, but haven't used it in about 8 years or so, it was just too bloaty and cumbersome. Also switched over to linux and was using vlc, which even on my Windows 7 laptop now I am using it on, it pretty much plays everything I want it to.

I'm not saying I was the biggest Winamp fan ever, but I've whipped my fair share of llama ass in my time.

Same here. I left winamp behind years ago.

Still whips the Llama's ass!

I'll continue using Winamp until I find something better. I've been using it for more than 10 years, so there's some serious inertia that app xyz will have to overcome...

Downfall? Do you know the history of Winamp?

I know it continued to be popular with the technically inclined. But it stagnated, instead of becoming the popular choice for media players. Otherwise it would not soon be shutting down.

I just believe the interface remained unfriendly for the popular audience, which in the end let us to this very point. Sad day.

I do not concur with this....

The purpose of Winamp is to play music, what more was it meant to do?, it already did ripping, managed my music library and could burn dvd's , in addition to all this, there were quite a few clever plugins and visualizations.... I for one hosted many a karaoke evening up here with the cd+g plugin.....

If you keep advancing, then you start to make the interface more complicated....

I don't believe the interface was ever designed with a wider audience in mind. I know we techies liked it, but it was non mainstream enough to secure the software's long term survival. Which led us to this point.

sad day, I used to use it so much but changed over to KM player a long time ago.

Haven't been using Winamp for a while now. Been using media monkey, play list editing for one is terrific.

Hey Mike,

You keen on writing an open source player similar to Winamp? I'm game, would love to have a media player that has all of the good parts of Winamp and none of the bad

I don't have the time dude. Average workday is 14 hours (contractor). Maybe when I hit retirement :D

Winamp is dead...... (It died the day Ver 3 came out)

Long live winamp 2.95!!! The only player I will ever use :D

and yes it still works on Windows 8.1....
You do know with Winamp 5.x they scrapped Winamp 3.x code base, went back to Winamp 2.x code base and implemented features from Winamp 3.x into that good code base. Lean, clean and very efficient, whilst having pretty cool new features like the library ect. They skipped version 4.x and went to 5.x because 2.x codebase + 3.x features = 5.x

I still use Winamp 5.x with some pretty cool plugins, love it.
