Basically if i hope any files onto my external from my computer upstairs, bring it to the other PC downstairs and plug it in, everything I copied gets deleted. I know it gets deleted because I opened the folder and literally watched the files vanishing one by one.

What is this guys? I have never come across this type of sorcery.

Deleted or hidden? I know the hider one

Could be. Quite hectic malware tbh. Could it also be something with profiles and permissions?
Profiles and permissions should delete, at worst it won't allow you to access the drive as far as I am aware...

I'm assuming both PCs are the same OS?

I did an experiment and reversed, copied a movie from the downstairs PC, took the drive upstairs, and the upstairs PC did the friggn same thing.

One is the latest updated Windows 10 and the other an older Windows 10 about 2 versions behind.

And when you return the drive to the originating PC the media is gone ? Definitely sounds like malware to me.

Can you check your task manager for any dodgy programs running? Something you can't trace to an app you installed recently.

In short, no matter what I now copy onto my HD it gets deleted on both PC's :confused:

You know when you right click on a folder, properties, security and users.

The listed users there are all for one machine and not the other. Do I need to have them both in that list?

Just removed everyone from the permissions list. When it doubt, give it a clout.

^

That fixed it. No more deletes.

But why do this to me?

Are you sure you are copying or moving? Moving will delete the files

Right-click and choose Copy

Yeah I was doing exactly that. It is some type of permissions problem. It essentially rendered my external HD useless for use on another PC. I'm still having issues with the permissions now because I don't know exactly what they should be.

I just have SYSTEM and Administrators now and have locked myself out of the drive. For now I'm giving up it's too late to deal with this.

It's hiding stuff.

The files copied from X pc do not show up on the external drive when plugged into Y pc and visa versa.

Were you not perhaps using a sync facility instead of copy? (so that it tried to make the HDD contents the same as the PC is was connected to.)

I'll take a look.

All I know is that each computer hides it's files from the other when put on the external drive. So a movie from one computer is hidden when plugged into the other and visa versa.

I had a similar issue, was working on stuff on the flash drive and I save but when I put it in another machine its gone.
I managed to get around this by using "safely remove hardware".
It also happened after a windows update. I never used to have this issue and its happening to my wife on her PC as well.

Thanks a lot it's good to know someone else is experiencing this! The last update for Win 10 started this. I will give that a try. At the moment I am completely formatting the hard drive which is taking flipping hours! It needed one anyway after being used as a movie/music slave for a couple of years now. I will try that safely remove and see how ti goes.
