I doubt my GTX460 will even support DirectX 12.
Edit, wiki says it will. But it will struggle like crazy.
As we announced earlier this year, for the first time ever, we are offering the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro as a free and easy upgrade for qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year after launch.** Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.
Free Upgrade Offer*
Great news! We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year! And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge. Sign up with your email today, and we will send you more information about Windows 10 and the upgrade offer in the coming months.
*Windows Offer Details
It is our intention that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the Internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit of upgrading to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer and support terms in coming months.
So you can at least get the Pro version for free, but will you need any of the extra "business" features?
Historically the main business features have been around working nicely on domains and "enterprise grade security" stuff, which has no real value in an average home environment.
I do believe in Win10 the Home/Pro and Business versions will have updates working differently, I think that Home/Pro will have "keep my PC patched and updated without asking me" on by default, and Enterprise will take a more cautious approach - that's one of the big differences. They went through it on this week's Windows Weekly podcast, but this stuff is soooo boring I battled to absorb the info![]()
Windows 8.1 non-pro sucks compared to Pro. They removed Remote Desktop server from it and charge you R1000 to get it back. Also can't join domains but who cares on a home PC.Are there any features you would need on a home PC that Win 10 Home edition does not have? I cannot find a list that shows the option, only what was posted in the article.
I did find some more info regarding the free updates here and here.

To Linux? Because that's the only reason I see to move from 7. That and when the support ends. Like most XP users only moved to 7 when support for XP ended and skipped 8/8.1Anybody who hasn't used Win10 and wants to stick with the MASSIVELY inferior Win7 for 5 years?
I still have to use Win7 from time to time and MAN, it ain't cool any more. We've moved on.
Why have different editions, if you're going to give it away for free?
If I have a laptop running the crappy, non-pro version of 8.1, will I only get the upgrade to 10 Home or whatever, or do I need to upgrade 8.1 to Pro first to get 10 Pro?
Does not say which versions will be upgraded to which. And nowhere else on the Internet either. If any edition of Windows 7 or 8 qualifies for any edition of 10, everybody would just get Pro. Or Enterprise, whatevz. It's right there in the article:

Ubuntu Desktop
Ubuntu Server
Ubuntu Kylin
Ubuntu Cloud
And there's not just Ubuntu. What about Debian, openSUSE, Arch, Tails, ...
I love Linux as much as anyone* but let's not pretend it's easier for the average user to choose a Linux distro than a Windows edition.
* anyone who prefers BSD
It will be much the same when Windows 8/8.1 released.
If you have a Windows 7/8/8.1 Pro version, you will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
I also have the slight suspicion that only users who bought their copies of Windows 7 or 8 within 1 to 6 months ahead of the release will qualify for the free upgrade.
I doubt that MS will go around dishing out free upgrades of their top OS versions.
They need it on as many boxes as possible since they now make their money through the Store and subscription services not the OS.
it's the same reason they are happy to give it away free to the pirates, as long as they don't need to support them, because they'll start buying from the store soon enough.
8.1 isn't really a new OS, it's just a service pack. When Windows 8 came out, you could buy Pro for like $15 if you had 7 or XP. ANY version, you got Pro. So no, it's not obvious. It will be much the same when Windows 8/8.1 released.

Linux has even more versions of desktop than windows.Huh? Only one of those is focused on the end-user "Workstation" if you ignore Kylin which is a special needs case for a very specific purpose.
So it's really Ubuntu Desktop and that's that.
Windows on the other hand will now have 5+ flavours of 'Desktop' which really isn't helping anyone. Did they learn nothing from RT?
It's a streaming feature.Did nobody notice this really interesting line? "...giving Xbox One owners the ability to play their Xbox One games from any Windows 10 PC in their home."
Has Microsoft finally ended the PC/Console war for ever, where all console gamers are now going to BE PC gamers too?
Oh the horror!
