Windows 10 Technical Preview - Insider Program

I would love if Microsoft made it possible to mark any kind of data connection as a metered connection... I have a dial up connection which works with my 3G modem. AFAIK you can only make Wi-Fi and mobile data connections as metered connections

They won't do that, is intentional. There are traps and lies in many places. And "Metered connection" is an ambiguous term. It doesn't stop automatic downloads. In other words you have no control, Microsoft decide.

In addition to the above other Windows components will download automatically, just to mention a few:
- Automatic drivers download (you can disable it in Settings app, but Windows plays fools with you by carefully designed options: press OK, the go back and verify it is saved). :(
- Defender (no relevant option)
- IE (option inside the application)
- Autoupdating apps (option in the Settings app)

Do you think it is all? In th1 (10240) the Flash Player is updated in the first place, even it is disabled in both browsers. A generic install, not insider's. Complete idiot designed it or everything is consistent with a single master plan which don't take into consideration a customer interest.

10586 installed. Dunno if its just me but graphics seem a lot crisper. Especially text.

It's not just you. I have noticed it too. I also like the little refinements to the shadow and window outlines of the gui theme thing... and the dark right-click menu on the start icon etc.

Crisper, cleaner and nicer.

EDIT:

Just for the record... I came to build 10586 from the RTM version, so these refinements might already have been present in subsequent builds.

I have noticed the start menu got improved a little... you could not search for programs, files, etc if you had scrolled through your tiles. This seems to have been fixed in 10586. I hope they add a multi-select feature for the tiles - I remember this feature being present in Windows 8.

My updates are stuck at waiting to install & waiting to download. Tried restarting, tried troubleshooter but no go.

Any ideas?

Try stopping WU service, then clear C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download , start WU service and scan for updates.

Mine did that at home, after doing the above it updated no problem

You're a rock star!

Ok so I encountered some malware. Seems clean after running kaspersky internet security, emisoft anti-malware, spybot search & destroy, malwarebytes etc. Thing is I can't re-enable windows defender or install avast. A windows defender update refuses to install.

Unless I can fix this I'm thinking of formatting & reinstalling. Thing is I don't wan't to use the MS media creation tool incase there are any remnants of malware left worrying that the installation media might be affected. So which ISO do I download on my linux laptop & not worry about activation as a windows insider preview participant. Installing all my games & stuff would take a while but I can get over that.

I suggest to use any healthly Win7/8/10 PC and download Media Creation Tool from the link below. Reason is that downloader has error checking built-in and Microsoft do not longer publish hash values for plain ISO files. This is how I downloaded and created 2nd official release (both 32-bit and 64-bit version on single ISO).
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When you access the same page from XP (or perhaps Linux) machine you will be getting link to a pure ISO HTTP download. Select the first option "Windows 10". Language "English", it will be Yankee version, but you can download UK language pack later. It has both Home and Pro installers, it will popup later during clean install (Insider will install Pro version). The last option is 32-bit or 64-bit. Link is valid for couple hours and you can use any download manager like FDM.

On the same page there is a link to the Insider builds, but I suggest to download 2nd official release and get insider builds later.

I don't have access to another windows pc short of installing win7 on my laptop.

Will have to go the iso route.

So I downloaded Win10_1511_EnglishInternational_x64.iso last night but it's only 2GB (2148094135 bytes) which I doubt is correct.

MS really suck, they don't provide hashes to verify file integrity & don't have plain old ftp servers you can pick a file from & resume it if required. You can't use utils like wget or aria2 to download with as you just get forbidden.

I need to find a way to resume this download, assuming it's not finished...

Use FDM (Free Download Manager), I think it has more tuned up default options for HTTP downloads. I am sure the websitsite supports resume downloads, but the link has a time validity limit, it will cut download.

Lack of hash verification is a part of bullying tactics to use WDM. They did supply it in the past, but not anymore.

BTW, Internation version is not I would chose. I would rather chose US or UK (if available).
