I have an issue with my Win10, upgraded from Win 7 with the free upgrade offer, however, no new builds install or update after. Win Update tells me there is an update (New Build), but it fails all the time.
Have tried Media creation Tool to upgrade in-place and the other Windows Update Tool.

I don't want to perform a clean install just yet.

Any one else experience this?

Check if your copy is still activated, updates fail due to this. Someone posted something similar how their key expired after a year due to a certain type of key they used.

Can you link me to that please?

Very possible that that Is the cause, (May have been updated from a not so genuine copy)

Atm, it's saying activated though

Yes reason i'm a bit hesitant is because im not sure my licence will activate again after that. The PC is custom built and hence doesn't have a serial number, and so its listed under my Microsoft account but with nothing to identify it by. All my other products have serial numbers next to it and is linked to my account.

You don't need a serial number for activation. If you want to test if you Windows will activate again after a clean install, just disconnect the existing hard drive/s and connect a spare drive. Download and install the latest Windows 10 ISO and skip the screen that asks for a product key.

Once you get to the desktop and connect the PC to the net, it should activate automatically. You won't need your Windows 7 key ever again since Windows 10 activation will work off the unique hardware hash created during initial installation and it's saved on Microsoft's activation servers.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Try deleting all the folders in that folder, empty recycle bin, reboot PC and search for updates.

Tried that, along with everything else found on the net

Tried sfc /scan and Dism also

What does this screen say?

Settings/System/about.

It should list Win 10:
Edition
Version
OS Build
Product ID

Then use this facility to see what version is actually installed on your PC.

Download the iso and mount then hit setup.exe It'll allow you to upgrade or clean install. If you haven't clean installed after the upgrade from 7>10 then you're advised to do it. Windows doesn't work well with upgrades no matter how M$ tries to spin it.
My sister's upgrade from 7 went flawless and is still running with no problems (about 6 months ago). I agree though that a clean install is best, but I had no success convincing her of that.

Yea I'm still on the first build so it doesn't show version and build, but I find it using winver in run, it shows version 10 build 10240, as I said, I am not able to upgrade ever since

I had no problems during install, all was well, just the update issues after

Wow the tool worked perfectly, got the key, checked it and also just tried the 'change product key' in Windows settings, it worked.
Thanks buddy.

Although it was always activated I still can't get the updates.
Now feel much safer doing a clean install with the key

So you wasted Windows 7 COA key, it is now locked to this motherboard.

Windows 10 do not update, as Windows Update component is crashing every time after downloading updates. It start download again with the same result. It happens 3 times the same day before it gives up, next day story continues. If it is a small download you might not notice extensive data usage, but it happened to me with 4GB major update. Give Microsoft more time to fix Windows.

Also it would be a good thing to check the latest firmware and BIOS is installed.

Yes a useful tool indeed.

Have you had a look at this link yet?

It provides you with details on the updates that are available for the version of Windows you have, plus the details of how to go about getting the anniversary upgrade.

What sort of connection to the Internet do you use? I assume you are aware that updates over metered connections will not take place unless you specifically allow them to take place.

I'm using an adsl connection and similar issues as the previous poster, the update shows up in Windows update, it downloads, but then the installation fails. And hence it tries to download the update over and over again.i do think other updates install though for eg the monthly windows defender update and others
