Windows 10: when you can upgrade, how long it will take

Set it up so that they downloaded the update from each other. Then you only have to get it once.

I have cracked windows 7 on both my home PC's and have received the reservation notification on both PC's. Haven't received any notification on my work laptop which is running genuine Windows 8.1.

My work machine doesn't show the notification either. Probably cos it's pulling a subset of updates from WSUS and not directly from MS.

Mine was there, then the icon disappeared for a month or 2 and now its back... weird!

That minimum RAM requirement is BS! I tried installing it on a C2D laptop of which I forgot I removed 1 gig of RAM (so it only had 1 gig left) and it was pretty much unusable.

You'll also find that it runs very slowly with the machine switched off ...

your work pc is probably part of some volume licensing thing

yes, but activation seems to be a bit of a "not sure" area

and i suppose if u have 32bit windows on at the moment, you will get 32bit upgrade? or will there be option to get 64bit
i had 32bit Win7 on home pc, at the time win8 came out and u could upgrade to win8 on that free upgrade offer, if u purchased win7 in last x months.
was fine at the time, only had 2Gb RAM in.... but now i've been wanting to put more memory and upgrade the pc a bit, but now i need to reinstall everything bit of a schlep
i guess the change over to Win10 will mean a full reinstall of everything in anycase no? so may as well install win8 64 and wait for the upgrade to 10, before reinstalling all the games & apps

am wondering about this myself;

but I did see somebody upgrade to the eval version;

all your apps stay; just created a MASSIVE folder called old windows in your c drive;
so will be easy to do and it will be done by many people;

wonder if the SA internet will crash when it gets released; gonna put a lot of pressure on our local download links;

Depends how the Win 10 update is going to be pushed, I suppose. If it's being pushed through Windows Update you could use the usual offline updating methods.

I recently upgraded my 8.1 to 10 (Build 10240) and noticed that I got the option to roll back to 8.1 within the first month only. The only thing that's still not quite clear to me is, come 29 July - will those of us who upgraded to 10 with legitimate versions of 7/8.1 get to install the retail version of Win 10 over the Insider version, or do we have to roll back to 7/8.1?

From what I understand, on 29 July Insiders will have two options. You can upgrade to a fully licensed retail version of 10 if you have a legitimate version of 7/8.1 and in so doing leave the Insider program, or stay in the Insider program and be upgraded to a version of 10 that's close to the retail version. If you however decided to stay in the Insider program, you'll have to do regular updates to keep your version of 10 activated.

i also havent seen anything on work pc... but i understood, if the computer is on Active Directory it doesnt show?

no clean installs. you have to install 7, upgrade to 10, with the option "wipe everything" to make it a fresh one. that's how i understand it.

What do you mean by "wipe everything"? Will that refer to a format of your HDD or just the Windows installation?

That sucks big time. Hopefully it's not install Win 7 > install all updates > Install Win 10? That is going to be a major pain.
