Windows 11 Support Thread

Still getting annoyed with small things in Window 11.

No more day of the week on the task bar. It was such an often used feature.

And no, I don't want to change my computer-wide date format just to "fix" it.

Can you still get the taskbar to show the full date and time including second's?

In the Search box window - type in Control Panel, then click on the Control Panel app icon or Open to display it

When the Control Panel window is displayed, make sure the View By option is set to Large icons

On the Formats tab, click on the Additional settings... button

In the Customise Format window, click on the Date tab, then change the Short date format from dd MMM yyyy to ddd dd MMM yyyy as highlighted below

Then click Apply, then click OK, which will close the Region dialog window, then close the Control Panel window

You should now have the short date displayed on the taskbar as shown below:

Another option to add the time back to your taskbar is using an app called ElevenClock. This app can add back the time and date on all your monitors, but it can also do a lot more than that if you’re interested.

All you need to do is download the latest version of ElevenClock from GitHub and run the installer. Once it finishes installing, you’ll immediately see the time and date on the taskbar of all your monitors.

If you want to customize your settings, you can go to your Start menu and open ElevenClock Settings, which gives you tons of options.

You can align your clock to the left of the taskbar, hide the notification badge, and much more. There’s even an option to add seconds to the taskbar clock, which you might find useful since Microsoft also removed that feature from Windows 11.

There are plenty of options, so explore them at your own leisure.

In order for the features to work, you’ll need to make sure ElevenClock is running at startup. That’s enabled by default when you install the app, so you just have to make sure you don’t disable it.

Microsoft starts moving more Windows 11 test features into the Beta channel - ZDNet

Microsoft is introducing into the Windows 11 Beta channel a number of the features to which its Dev Channel testers already have had access as of today's build 22581.

1648056626387.png

Microsoft is releasing a new Windows 11 Insider preview build to both the Dev and Beta channels today, March 23. Build 22581 includes a handful of features already available to Dev Channel testers plus a bunch of fixes and known issues.

With Build 22581, Beta channel Insiders now can test Live Captions, Start folders, the redesigned Task Manager, tablet-optimized taskbar, and more.

Not every single feature that is has been introduced to the Dev channel necessarily will be in the new Beta channel test builds.

A quick refresher on Microsoft terminology: The Dev channel is considered the experimental ring where features that are introduced may or may never ship. The Dev Channel builds are not tied to any specific Windows release.

The Beta channel feature set is closer to what could get released to general customers, but Microsoft has not committed to every feature that makes its way into the Beta channel shipping.

The Release Preview channel is the ring that is aligned with specific releases and includes features that are expected to be part of a particular Windows feature update.

Even though Microsoft officials committed last year to releasing just one feature update for Windows 10 and 11 each year going forward, they left themselves a lot of wiggle room to introduce new features outside of this update.

Microsoft is holding a Windows hybrid-work virtual event April 5 where officials could potentially show off features that may come to Windows 11 later this year which are not yet in Insider testing.

Because the same test build is available to both the Dev and Beta Channels as of today, the so-called "magic window" has opened for a limited time during which Insiders can switch channels if they want to do so.

This switching opportunity will close once Microsoft releases builds with higher numbers to the Dev Channel. (Details on how to switch channels are in Microsoft's blog post about 22581.)

Microsoft is expected to release Windows 11 22H2, its lone Windows 11 feature update, around October 2022, last I've heard.

Microsoft officials haven't said whether this feature update simply will be a sweep of the various incremental features and updates from the past year or if it will include any brand-new "major" new features.

New issue with Windows 11 - it has just appeared out of the blue as of this morning - my Realtek Audio Driver seems to have an issue with the signal from the SPDIF optical output connector to my Sony Home Theatre System - every couple of seconds there's a drop in the music I am playing - I have tried rebooting, and using the 'New' & 'Old' versions of Media Player, but to no avail - seems it's also doing the same thing when I am streaming Netflix content as well now - any suggestions on how to resolve this irritating problem?

Report it to microsoft and wait for a fix or stop using beta software. Yes, I classify Windows 11 as beta in its current state.

More than likely a Realtek driver issue

Looks like it was the ARC Return channel setting for HDMI 1 on the Sony Home Theatre that didn't like having the video signal from the PC sent via HDMI cable & the audio via SPDIF, when my laptop was also plugged directly into the TV via VGA.

The moment I reset the ARC return settings for the HDMI 1 input setting to combine both the audio & video signal from the PC, the problem resolved itself!

And there are people who automatically blamed poor Win 11

Hi everyone,

I've received this error after restarting my computer, I'm not sure if it is got to do with the new Windows 11 update, I'm part of the Beta channel or it could be a coincidence.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Also, my apologies if this is not posted in a correct thread.

Thanks in advance.

ene.sys seems to be related to RGB software.
I would suggest to reinstall the software.

Microsoft is finally making it easier to switch default browsers in Windows 11 - The Verge

It’s a one-click process now

1648567298889.png

Microsoft is finally making it easier to change your default browser in Windows 11. A new update (KB5011563) has started rolling out this week that allows Windows 11 users to change a default browser with a single click.

After testing the changes in December, this new one-click method is rolling out to all Windows 11 users.

Originally, Windows 11 shipped without a simple button to switch default browsers that was always available in Windows 10.

Instead, Microsoft forced Windows 11 users to change individual file extensions or protocol handlers for HTTP, HTTPS, .HTML, and .HTM, or you had to tick a checkbox that only appeared when you clicked a link from outside a browser.

Microsoft defended its decision to make switching defaults harder, but rival browser makers like Mozilla, Brave, and even Google’s head of Chrome criticized Microsoft’s approach.

In the latest update to Windows 11, you can now head into the default apps section, search for your browser of choice, and then a button appears asking if you’d like to make it the default.

All of the work of changing file handlers is done in a single click, making this a big improvement over what existed before.

Microsoft has clearly listened to the feedback and criticism over the changes it made here in Windows 11. The software maker continues to improve Windows 11 monthly, with updates like this or bigger changes like Android apps and improvements to the taskbar.

Microsoft is now planning to detail bigger changes to Windows 11 for hybrid work at an event on April 5th.

Microsoft Starts Blocking Vulnerable Drivers in Windows 10, Windows 11 - PC MAG

Nobody wants their drivers on this list.

Microsoft is introducing a new Windows security feature that will automatically block drivers deemed as being vulnerable to malicious behavior.

As ghacks.net reports, it's called the Vulnerable Driver Blocklist and forms part of the defenses offered by Windows Defender for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2016.

However, it's only enabled by default for Windows 10 in S mode or on PCs with a Core Isolation feature referred to as Memory Integrity (more on this below).

The new feature was revealed via a tweet by David Weston, vice president of OS Security and Enterprise at Microsoft:

1648567793442.png

A driver is blocked if Microsoft deems it to have a known security vulnerability that can be exploited, has malware behaviour previously associated with it, or demonstrates behaviour that circumvents the Windows Security Model and can be exploited.

Clearly no vendor wants its drivers on the block list, and therefore this should encourage them to ensure their drivers are secure. It also means that if a vulnerability is discovered, the vendor responsible for it should be much more inclined to react very quickly, especially if their products rely on the driver in question being available to Windows users.

That's an old feature and also one I can't enable due to the fact that both my Logitech Cam and Mouse drivers gets flagged.
Both devices works perfectly fine but unfortunately Logitech doesn't seem to have plans to ever update these drivers again.
Microsoft however is NOT gonna force me to buy new peripherals just because they don't agree with my current drivers :p
