Windows 11 Support Thread

As previously said, each to their own ... I have ZERO use for it as I don't have to access numerous different folders in numerous different locations.

Comparing it to tabs in a browser doesn't make sense :X3:
I work in numerous tabs and don't drag and drop files all around.

I would love it if Excel and Word could also work with tabs.

Your Windows PC Has Hidden Themes - Lifehacker

Some of the best Windows themes are hidden on your PC.

Windows themes offer a unique mix of wallpapers, sounds, and colours to switch between. Many of them come by default, and there are more themes to download from the Windows Store.

But you don’t need to look elsewhere to find more themes for your PC. Some of the best Windows themes are just hidden.

The reason these themes are hidden is because they aren’t actually meant for you—Microsoft added these new themes to Windows 11 22H2 for education users.

Anyone using a fully-updated Windows device for school is able to take advantage of these new themes to make their machine feel more personal, but you don’t actually need an education machine to access the features. They’re baked into the 22H2 update.

They do require a specific set of steps to download first, though.

My dinosaur Core 2 Duo desktop PC with an 'unsupported' install of Windows 11 Enterprise has just popped up this window, which appeared whilst I was busy in the kitchen for a few minutes - any ideas what's going on here that I should be concerned about?

:whistling:

Those are surprisingly powerful, how do they get delivered if you order from eBay?
Since it came in the original box with the OEM HP keyboard and mouse it was quite a big package, so I guess I paid on volumetric weight.

If it was just the unit+stand+PSU I guess shipping would be less than half.

All in about R2600 - which is what you can get the more powerful Ryzen 3 65watt HP EliteDesk Mini 805 for. I already had two of those and they are good, but this is just on a whole different level of power efficiency.

Dang it!

A week ago I could still fire up my work VM without any issues... now things are screwy. Can't open the Windows Security applet either. Looks like my OG install from September 2021 needs to go down. Dreading a clean install but I guess that is what I'll be doing today.

System restore was utterly useless, of the 4 restore points I had all failed.

Dodged a bullet, after running Get-VM in PowerShell I saw all three instances could not be retrieved. Which means it knew there was 3, just nothing about them. Re-creating each one in Hyper-V solved that. Sadly now I ran into a seemingly known issue in the latest version of Windows that breaks TPM 2.0. This is a bit of a problem as my work VM needs TPM and I cannot create a certificate for it since my actual TPM is not working.

Well, that won't be solved by a clean install, so I guess I'll carry on as is.

I can still use my Windows 10 work VM but it's just that each time I try to access any company resources I need to approve the sign-in in the Authenticator app - instead of it just storing my credentials.... which it can't because it lacks TPM :cautious:

Going from bad to worse here. I made a system restore point and cleared the TPM - did not fix my issues. Restored back to the restore point - it worked this time but TPM was still cleared.

When I tried to re-enable PIN login it fails and in the error logs I see :

SCEP Certificate enrollment initialization for Local system via https://AMD-KeyId-578c545f796951421221a4a578acdb5f682f89c8.microsoftaik.azure.net/templates/Aik/scep failed:

So it seems microsoft broke the SCEP enrollment for AMD fTPM....

OK, seems to also affect the latest updates on Windows 10....

Edit : Downloading KB5021255 to see if that solves it.

What a tiny bugger this TPM module is.

My tight ITX setup means the PSU will need to come out

Much better

Yay! I can now use a PIN for logging on again

Went ahead and did a clean install - well worth it and only took me about 2 hours. Well 4 hours prepping since I cloned my 1TB M.2 to a 2.5" laptop HDD as backup and to restore Appdata I may need.

Loving 11 even more now. So fresh and clean with added hardware TPM for extra love.

Is it faster and more snappy now?
I'd dreading a re-install but I think I may need to bite the bullet because my install is very tired :(

Because I have applied so many hacks and regedits since the initially install I decided to do a clean install of the latest ISO. Does feel a lot faster.

For me the big thing is I do not want to loose anything - so I cloned my system drive to a laptop HDD on a USB3 to SATA adapter. After Windows installed I go through my Program Files folders on the cloned driver and decide what software I still want. Before downloading and installing it I first copy the relevant Appdata or Programdata folders to my new install so I do not loose any settings. In my case with all the software I need it took about 2 hours.

Thankfully my work environment is all inside my work VM so I just have to enable Hyper-V, copy the VHD file and then setup a new VM for it - and I'm ready to work.

I have likewise hacked and regedited the living hell out of my install, how it even functions as well as it does I don't know but Explorer has got verrrrrry slow now, often it will take more than a few seconds to show what in a folder, even if I am only just switching to Explorer.

Good tip about the copying the program setting using a copy of the relevant Appdata or Programdata folders for that. I also always clone the drive or make a VHD before a fresh install, there's always some file or setting you need.
