Windows 11 Support Thread

Today's challenge - upgrading an old Lenovo G400 laptop (Celeron 1005 CPU, 4GB RAM & a 500GB SATA HDD) from Windows 8.1 Home to Windows 11 Home 25H2 - used Rufus & a Win11 25H2 ISO this time around - started the update last night at 22h30 - the installation finished at around 01h30 this morning (I did a clean local account install & wiped Win 8.1 completely)- then the fun started with downloading all of the additional Windows Updates - including an additional one from Win 11 25H2 v26200.6584 to v26200.7462, which has just completed & is about to install...

Then the inevitable additional apps & utilities installations - including MS Office 2021 Pro Plus - to fill up the rest of the day for me...

It's for a friend of mine - I upgraded his newer laptop for him from Win 10 to Win 11 25H2 last week (*see various posts above) - this is his old Lenovo laptop that's been stored in a cupboard for a while - he's going to be donating it to a retired woman, who will just be using it for email correspondence, the occasional MS Word document & PDF's, and browsing the web - and possibly also using it to watch Netflix / Prime Video / Disney+ as well... ;)

So I guess that lightning-fast response & massive data storage are not required parameters or a high priority for her... 💻🐌⏱️

He really hates that poor old lady

The 2021 way (when I built my current PC) includes relatively expensive SSDs and much cheaper HDDs. SSD, being significantly faster, host the OS and program files. The HDDs are for media and data. Works great. Coincidentally, I recently ordered a 16 gig HDD to replace a few smaller, older disks. I shudder to think what 16 gig of NVME SSD would have cost

PS: I have upgraded from Win 95 to Win 11 without issues, gradually over about 25 years... Good strategies are generally built on sound basic principles that still remain valid.

Just 16Gig ?

Just 16Gig ?
Oops. I get confused with the times when a HDD was generally 10 meg and a BIG disk was 40 meg 50 meg was housed in a washing machine. In those days, a gig was bigger than infinity and a terabyte was a made-up word

Yep dumb autocorrect changed the capacity of my new disk from 16 TB to 16 gig

Does anyone have this feature, the current start menu is trash:

Redesigned Start menu

Microsoft also introduced a redesigned Start menu layout that combines the Pinned, Recommended, and All sections into a single scrollable interface.

The frame is larger than before, which some users found excessive, but it now dynamically adjusts based on screen resolution.

The updated layout allows up to eight pins per row. A new toggle at the top-right lets you show or hide the mobile sidebar when a mobile device is linked to your computer.

People hate the newest layout also

Does not want to install
2025-12 Security Update (KB5072033) (26200.7462)
comes up with this error.
Install error - 0x800f0991
Should I ignore and wait till next update.

Any suggestions. I did Google went through all those steps still nada. Cleared download buffers etc.

1) I also tried a USB install. But it only sees the usb-drive and not the SSD, where I want it to install.

2) Then I ordered 8.5GB cd's, burn ISO image to it. Do an ISO install from DVD player.

Used Rufus to do a clean install. All sorted.

Ignore and wait for the next update, that's what I did.
Just pause updates in the meantime for a few weeks so you don't get nagged.
