Windows 7 a Linux killer?

If it wasn't for MS in the first place and how they changed the software market, you wouldn't have anything to complain about in the first place

Why is it that everyone always biatches at the company on the top of the food chain (not talking about monopolies here)

EDIt: BTW how well does VR work in Linux?

actually, the 1st GUI was on Amiga... I even remember my Amiga500.

and the leaders in innovation in desktop development have always been Apple.

Even DOS was not original. They took an existing solution, stripped out all the hardcore networking crap and made a entry level needs stuff loaded operating system, which they promptly sold to IBM, took the money and started Microsoft, copyrighted MS-DOS, and IBM was resorted to still having to buy a seperate license for each and every sytem they built. You see, they basically made IBM pay twice.

And this ladies and gentlemen, is the number 1 (#ONE) reason why I hate bill gates...

I am not jealous... I don't hustle... it's immoral and unethical. I won't even over charge a client even if I know he can afford it and doesn't care.

Heard it all before.. hear it from my boss ever day.. And anyone who tells me that if they had a business opertunity to do what He did and they wouldn't.. I'll call you a liar.

If everything he did was "illegal" and "immoral" Dont you think he would be in jail instead of one of the richest men on the planet, or of course, now i'm going to hear that he bought his way out of it

This a difference between dishonesty and breaking the law... what he did was 100% legal, up until the antitrust lawsuits, but that was bound to happen.

So i must be a liar, but then if I am a liar, then I am confused, what does that make the people who tell lies...

sudo apt-get install <insert_name_of_app_here>

Now I ain't no fancy mathmaticist with no book-learnin' or nothin' but HOOWEY that there command sure looks a darn lot less than "roughly 5 lines of code". Now if ya'll excuse me I'm gonna go tie me down a hog!! YEEHAW!!

Try this with OO3?

What I mean is, if you have an oppertunity to buy software rights from somebody, and sell it to another company for a profit, are you not going to do it? Because thats what he did to start his company, and I am sure you and everyone else would of done the same. Its all about seeing an oppertunity and having the balls to take a chance.

No, he took public domain, and turned into intellectual property. Kinda the same as what Disney did to the Grimm Brothers...

The rest of my argument is at the following site: http://www.fsf.org/

"QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) was developed by Seattle Computer in 1980 to compete with Microsoft’s BASIC Operating System. In 1981, Microsoft paid Seattle Computers $25,000 total for licensing QDOS and its source code. The contract stipulated that nothing in this licensing agreement shall require Microsoft to identify its customer to Seattle Computer Products”. The mystery customer Microsoft already had to sublicense QDOS was no less than IBM, with revenues at the time approaching nearly $30 billion. The licensing of QDOS would be the best move so far from Bill Gates.

- Later, Gates bought all rights to QDOS from Seattle Computer Products for $50,000. It was the bargain of the century. IBM also agreed to leave copyright on the operating system to Microsoft, which would make Microsoft a major player in the industry."

You cant deny that the IT world would not be as it is today without what they did, but we can sit back and cry all day saying he was evil.. Blah

You are right there.

What can be argued is whether it would be better or worse. But that is a pretty pointless arguement.

I'm a linux user and have no problem with Microsoft, I use both but If I was forced to choose between the two it would have to be Windows, not because it's better just that it allows me to game and use proprietary apps not available on Linux.

Fair and touche... I have consulted with my colleagues, and you are write about the software rights purchased... but I still don't support software rights... software should be pd, that's just my feeling, hence I use 100% GNU/GPL/PD software.

Download the .deb from OO.org, double click and you're set.

Easy.

Not so. This has been posted before as well. You need to go into the desktop-integration folder and install that as well. about 5 lines in total. Now I know this is not exactly a whole lot of effort, but it's certainly not obvious, and beginners will struggle with this.

The first home computer featuring a GUI was the Apple Lisa, although the idea had been pioneered some years earlier at Xerox PARC (e.g. the Alto).

I've been using 7 for a few days straight now, today I had to switch back to my ubuntu install... boy what a relief, using it is far more enjoyable and user-friendly(for me)than Windows.

My Gnome desktop looks better too with all the transparency effects and it is a lot cooler with compiz setup the way I like it.

free/opensource

windows will never be able to cause the end of linux
even if it is free the code will never be open

if not for open source i would not have been able to have pvr functionality
from a entry level tuner card and old pc at a cost of R400 while going the windows route at that time 3 years ago would have meant paying double that
just for the operating system. which only supported expensive pvr cards.

and this pc rarely has to rebooted
