So i finally decide to give windows 7 a shot. Pulled out my ubuntu drive, put in a fresh hdd and installed 7. First thing i try is to get onto my network, but it hasn't found the drivers for my network card... I have no idea what brand my network card it, cos i have never had the need to install drivers. Windows XP and every flavor of unix i have tried have just worked on this card... I thought windows 7 meant the end of Drivers??? How can something that worked on the old OS without any trouble give issues on the new one?? Microsoft definitely screwed something up here... Anyone got any ideas on a quick fix, else i think i am just gonna put mint on this drive.

just pull out some old driver disks and see if the auto driver search and install picks up a suitable driver.. or you can attach a USB modem and let it search for updates (usually an optional update) then install the driver

Win7 is like the updated version of all Windows OS's. Best in the market, whether it's starter. Just use some software to search for appropriate drivers.

Windows 7 moved a lot of older drivers off onto Windows Update instead of on the disk itself, to save space and make room for other drivers. Some of the stuff they moved over were either obscure, very old or rarely used. In some cases like the OP's, it is an issue, but a few minutes of time can easily fix it.

Few minutes? Quite strange how every one here jumps to windows rescue saying i must get third party apps and usb modems install to "easily" solve my problem. Mbawala, this is an AMD64, so it shouldn't need to be forced into 32bit mode ever... I would gladly hop online and let windows search for it, but again i need to get a damn usb modem setup and then do the update. I don't think this is a "few minute fix" as Asha'man X refers to. Anyways something that works on previous installments of windows shouldn't now be an issue in the operating system, if it is then it is A STEP BACKWARDS!!

Anyways thanks for the tips (well everyone except Mbawala). I just cannot accept that i must now go and search for drivers for my machine cos windows considered my 5 year old hardware obsolete and not important...

When I had Windows XP I had an old dial-up modem ....... I had to go find it's drivers. So it's not just a Win7 thing. Obscure devices (be it brand or age) aren't covered by most OS's.

Windows has always been backwards. 7 is nothing new, it seems great because it followed $hitsta.
Still a fragile OS. I'm not impressed with 7 personally but it has it's place.

Aren't covered by Windows OS's.

Dropped in a mint live disk and bam straight onto my network with the same card! I guess windows 7 will wait for another time!

That is so odd dude, i have 3 pc's with windows plus a netbook and a laptop and i have never had to install network drivers for it. Actually i have never had to install anything but graphics drivers for it.

Depending on how old your hardware is it may not actually support windows 7, i recall when windows xp first came out i had to find drivers for bloody everything some of my things like scanners printers never had drivers released for xp and i had to them.

Just put mint on the drive if you feel so strongly about it, not sure why you are loading windows 7 if you can use mint.

Aqua odd you are always so nasty to windows yet most of the games you play use windows, so i cannot see why you are always talkin kuk about windows. I use windows 7 without a single problem, it is the first microsoft OS that i can truly say has 0 problems for me, never crashes, runs really well. Everything works.

Why is it fragile again?

Wanted to try out 7, since i am not a fan of windows and everyone is talking it up so much i decided let me give it a chance. I am mainly a OS X user (switched when Vista let us down so terribly) and i always feel i must give everything a chance. Already installed Mint, checking out XBMC package from the repo as i type this...

Ya sounds like the best idea, if you have no use for an OS not much point running it.

I'm an IT techie and I've loaded Windows 7 more times than I care to remember and yet not a single install have we had problems with 7...if there was a driver missing just hop to windows update and there it was. Only real problems is the customers complaining they don't know how to use it cause they been camping on XP for the last 8 years. Windows 7 is the best OS from Microsoft to hit the market and sales prove it too.

If you have driver problems it means you're probably using some cheap hardware made out of someones garage in Zimbabwe...

lol, like I said, it has it's place and for me that is to game... :D

I say it's fragile because I have to restart it every few days, if I don't something will crash the OS, I played BF2 the other night have not restatred in 2 days in the middle of a session the game crashes and I have to reboot because windows can't get back to normal, today I unplugged my PC because I had to clean up and I plugged it back and now my framerates are low, not sure why so I restarted, now I have to figure this out.... if the restart did not fix it.

Can you honestly tell me that you run Windows and don't reboot or shutdown at least every 2 to 3 days? can you run yours 24/7 for weeks? linux and OSX both are able to do this for me.

I reboot everyday, generally don't like leaving my pc's on for days on end. Waste of power. Bf 2 crashes on all platforms dude, the same as bfbc2 does. Not sure it is a windows problem.

I can with Windows 7 and I don't reboot or shutdown every couple of days. Mine can stay on for weeks!

Yes BF2 crashes but if the OS locks up the OS is to blame, the OS should still function after an app or game crashes.

Then you're lucky and probably have a basic generic setup, I have extras like a tv tuner, Asus soundcard(with dodgy drivers that I can't do much about), and put my system to abuse daily, it fails me every few days.

Look... I don't hate windows, i'm glad it exists I just think it's overated.

Why are you blaming windows 7 for a lock up? Are you sure you do not have a hardware problem? When i have issues windows still works 100%. Only a hardware fault or unstable overclock ever sees my windows 7 struggle.

Sounds like hardware not windows to me. Be honest though you enjoy having a dig at it at every given opportunity :D. Windows 7 is not over rated, it is the best microsoft OS ever made and for me it is the best OS on the market in terms of what it can do on one platform.
