In Windows XP, I could set up my network credentials so that I could use SQL Server Management Studio windows authentication without being on the domain.

I see in Windows Vista and Windows 7 this cannot be done. It just says "Login failed for user ''"

Does anyone know how to work around this?

I think this should work, can't test it at the moment.

Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\Credential Manager\Add a Windows Credential

Yip, tried that, does not work :(

So irritating. And I also notice that in XP when you change your password it updates all of the entries, in Windows 7 you have to update each entry manually.
