With Windows 7 there will be two primary editions: Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Professional. We think those two SKUs will meet most customers’ needs
So only 2 editions from now. Now we only need pricing info!

32/64 bit - so four editions.
Ehh no, x86 and x64 is not a SKU, it just determines hardware platform.

But technically there are 4 editions. They have a home basic for developing countries and then also the Enterprise editions for larger enterprises. For genreal consumer, there are only 2 editions to choose from and not the 4 like with Vista.

This is a step in the right direction. It makes it much simpler for the consumer. The vast differences in the Vista editions were complicated, and were simply motivated by greed from M$ (even though M$ didn't need the cash).

What is actually changing (I still count 6 versions) - the only real change i notice is that the more expensive versions will include everything that the cheaper versions include

We’ll also continue to offer Windows Starter edition, which will only be offered pre-installed by an OEM. Windows Starter edition will now be available worldwide. This edition is available only in the OEM channel on new PCs limited to specific types of hardware.

And certainly there is also a small set of customers who want everything Windows 7 has to offer. So we will continue to have Windows 7 Ultimate edition to meet that specialized need. Windows 7 Ultimate edition is designed for PC enthusiasts who “want it all” and customers who want the security features such as BitLocker found in Windows 7 Enterprise edition.

Am I going to be able to go from Vista to 7 without paying YABUMST* ???

* Yet Another Bluddie Unnecessary MicroSoft Tax.

What I want to know is: Will Home Premium be like Vista Ultimate and Professional like Vista Business? Or will it be like XP, with Pro being better.

I don't think you can compare the Vista releases with window 7 - my guess. I suppose we'll have to wait and see when the release what features is available in which edition.

guess ill get home premium and have the RDP addon via registry ;)

Are you guys even reading what's written in these articles? You can't buy Starter and Home Basic isn't even listed by some sites. It's only for emerging economies, I doubt we'll get it in shops either.

When you're looking to buy win7 there'll basically be 2 choices unless you want Ultimate, but MS say they're not really concentrating on this. It makes it a lot easier than choosing between home basic, premium, business and ultimate. All of those were options for a home user, I'm running business because it's better than Home Premium for me but with win7 I'll run Home Premium.

Hopefully home premium retail gets the 64bit disc in the box this time. I don't want to have to buy the retail edition and then have to order the 64 bit disc like with vista.

What does that mean? Will Microsoft not really bother with Ultimate? Sorry, I'm a bit confused.
