Windows 7: First impressions

does anyone know of an anti virus thats actually compatible with win7? After attempting Trend and AVG ...oh and yeh this article just said tthe same things I heard a million times, I agree with it but was it really neccesary for another article on win7?

one thing that i HATE bout 7 (i think vista also does it, not sure) is how it behaves with regard to folder contents and the style in which it is displayed. e.g. i have 3 mp3 files in a folder with some other stuff, then windows decides it's a 'music folder' and sets the view to display columns for artist/album/etc etc etc. ehn all i want is the filename. what's even worse is that the column for filename is always too small so you only see half the title and have to manually resize it. other than that the 'classic' tree view on the right would have been handy but im hoping/guessing that the classic theme will be part of the final release of 7.

My AVG free works fine. Whether its effective I do not know as it seems Win7 is fairly secure. Its very quick compared to Xp scans.

odd...my win7 on my computer and notebook both got unstable everytime I installed either AVG or Trend and tried Avast but alas no success, so thought or assumed its a general problem but sounds as though ti might just be me "gulp"

So what does 7 do that XP doesn't, that I actually need?

The article is spot on. A few issues I had was due to my lack of knowledge on Win7.

Additionally:

The program compatibility installs works like a charm. I could not set up my chipst drivers untill I found this function. Asus setup did not reconize the WIN7 version untill I used it.

I only have 1 hardware item causing a problem. I ancient Sat card. Win7 64bit cannot find and implement the 32 bit driver. :D

I am operating from Win7 now and M$ will have to come and tear it of my desktop if they want me to stop using it. The Xp system next to this sytem is now driving me mad.

PS: The Explorer 8.0 works like a dream on it and so do the Windows live E-mail.

"Housten, we have a winner"

Maybe use the compatibility mode for the install? Right click the install .exe and follow the prompts.

I love Windows 7. I can't imagine going back to a previous version of Windows.

some nice first impressions, will be moving to Win7 as soon as it gets released

it is a new install there wont be much to scan :p

For a long time just installing a copy of Windows was resulted in a good couple of hours of clicking,

Hours of clicking? Ah.. sure...

Did you know you can ALT-TAB in the Win7 install program?
Biggest problem I have with Win7 Beta is that... it expires... makes me hesitant to commit my life to it, so for now it's a play toy to mess around in but my XP partition is still the bread and butter of my PC.

NOD32 works just fine for me.

New GUI - note how ppl confuse GUI with OS. If the Win98 classic interface works for you - nothing.
DirectX 10 and 11 if you're a gamer. If not - nothing.

That still remains your own begrudged opinion. I doubt if you even tried Win7.

Dear readers
You cannot make a deccission based on MAc/OS/Apple fanatics gripes against M$ and DRM. (See the Windows Beta thread to get the vibe.)

Best is to install Win7 on a spare drive and test it for yourself. You have nothing to loose and much to gain. Maybe you, like many others here, will just refuse to ever go back. WinXp is still running on the other systems here in my office but I can promise you. its a drag compared to Win7. I will use XP till the official win7 release or even the first beta becomes available. I will be first in line to buy Win7 on the official release date.

So take the small step and just try it for yourself. Like anything else, you dont like it, throw it away. Format the drive and you have lost nothing but gained some valuable experience.

Noticeable slow down?

none whatsoever

the only time i experience lag is when an external drive has gone to sleep and i access it again, it takes time to spin up. but that is beyond the os, so ya.

I have 2 problems with Win 7:

1. Media player 12 stopped working completely. i was very bugy in the beginning and now completely stopped.

2. When working on a domain fileshares sometimes seems to stop working. Windows tries to access the share then just nothing happens. Reboot is the only way to solve the problem.
