Windows 7 is outdated technology – Microsoft

Same here. We need to find a Home user to test it...

Any Home users wanna test this http://www.thewindowsclub.com/make-...ore-downloading-or-installing-windows-updates and let us know if it works or not?

Two words: Group Policy.

Edit: not in home

Group Policy is not available in Win 10 Home.
Last time I tried on a WIN 10 Home PC the link you provided did not work.
The Regedit option worked until the PC was restarted. Then the changes made were simply removed. Did not try and find out why the changes would not stick. I convinced the owner of that PC to upgrade to Win 10 Pro.

I have no issues at all with windows updates. I have however done a string of changes in Group Policy to get to that point.
Win 10 is now very stable except for a few issues related to IP addressing when swopping from one connectivity method to another, trying to get Hotspot to work and Network Discovery.

The IP address issue drove me mad when I was away over Xmas. Was continually switching between VC and MTN mobile networks and 3 ADSL connections.

Ended up falling back using Ipconfig every time I logged on to a different connection. (/release and /renew)

MS Edge ? Well the browser does all that I want it to do so I am completely converted over to it except for one large corporate website, which still only works with IE.

Fast? Jerky? Have never had speed issues with WIN 10. Not seen any jerky behaviour since the WIN 10 Anniversary upgrade last year.

Defender security updates? All install fine. Only had one problem, which was caused by disconnecting too quickly from VC mobile via a tethering hotspot. PC took longer than usual to sort itself out when next connected to an ADSL connection, but did not have to do anything special except wait about 10 minutes before using the PC.

The spy issue? Yes it does leave a bad taste in your mouth, but show my any Smart phone or tablet that does not do the same. And BTW not nearly as invasive as Google is and especially Chrome! Could not believe the levels of background data usage being sucked up by Google play store and play services on a new Smart Phone (Huawei) and almost the same on a new SS Galaxy! Almost 37% of all data usage on both is being sucked up by Google Play services!

Each to his own. Those of us that had the WIN10 upgrade forced down our throats have had to come to terms with WIN 10 and once you spend the time with WIN10 and sort out the issues that bug you, it is just as good or bad as any of the previous versions.

^This.

I had been refered to many sites giving solution for Windows 10 Home. Actually these solutions had been copied from previous versions, I can confirm there is no solution for Windows 10 Home. Some of registry entries are reverting back immediately after reboot, other will sneak silently back after a week, some other are simply ignored.

Complete configuration of Windows and built-in apps takes couple hours and then any major update will reset everything you done to defaults. It is a second reason I say Windows is not ready for a prime time.

Amount of time I spend maintaining Windows 10 reminds me MS DOS times. The thread should be renamed to "Windows 10 is outdated technology, it doesn't keep up - users said".

"Back in the day" i could understand the average user HAVING to use "windows xyz" but with most products now moving online(google docs is excellent !) why do ppl still need a windows based box ?

One reason is the cost of connectivity. Another is the availability of connectivity. Try and work when on a farm in the Karoo as I have just had to do. No MTN, or Cell C just a poor VC connection via a cell repeater which is now apparently "illegal" in SA.

We are one hell of a long way away from ubiquitous connectivity in SA ,hence the need for stand alone systems that require no connectivity.

On line is a dream for many.

I am sure you can get satellite connectivity in the Karoo ?
I am sure you could even have a mobile setup using solar power.

I am under the impression that Openserve have fibre to every town in SA
Or at least that was as far as I got with someone on the forum that should know ( just before the "thought-police" got to them )

You need to find some people to help dig some trenches ....:D

Ja satellite systems do work everywhere, EXCEPT most farmers are totally convinced that satellite services " DO NOT WORK". The reason is the exceptionally bad performance most of them that signed up for Telkom's VSAT services experience and continue to experience.
Yet everyone of them enjoy Premium DSTV service uninterrupted. The one site I visited where the Telkom service was still installed and supposedly working "sometimes" showed that the problem is a poorly installed and pointed antenna. It took about 30 seconds to see that the alignment was out and that the skew angle adjustments were not correct. A label on the Hornfeed stated the skew angle had to be 45 degrees, which was clearly not the correct setting. A few adjustments improved the signal immensely. THEN to get Telkom to re-activate the service, took about 4 hours. What I think is happening is that Telkom de-activates the service after a while automatically if no response is received from a VSAT when the hub polls the terminal. (The assumption is that there is no power, which is not correct anymore) I had to call in the help of very senior Telkom personnel to get the call centre operator to re-activate the service, because the operator insisted that it could not be done until a Telkom technician had visited the site and that that would be in 6 weeks time.

Yes most towns do have fibre access BUT that does not help with covering the farms.

No, how does a casual visitor use a satellite service without subscribing to one?

It is not about power supply either. All the farms I visited have Eskom power, and some very interesting privately installed power distribution systems. Many farmers are simply out of range of the cell network coverage, with MTN being almost non-existent. So quite a few have had cell repeaters installed for 2G, very few have 3G repeaters. But when these go faulty, they seem not able to get VC to come and repair or replace, the reason quoted is that cell repeaters are now "illegal".
There area couple of aspects to this debate, but we should maybe start another thread on this.
