Windows 7 is outdated technology – Microsoft

Which one do you have?

I have:

Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD
Up to 2,500MB/s sequential read and 1,500MB/s write

It's pretty fast!

NVMe Intel SSDPMW40

I think mine is an earlier model to yours.

I am right now using Windows for the 1st time since 2010 when I used Windows 7.

In the meantime I have used both Linux (ultrabook) and MacOS (MacBook pro) equally and both have shown continuous improvement in pretty much all areas during this time. Linux desktop has gone from a bit finicky with occasional hardware issues to rock solid. MacOS changed less drastically but every version has been a definite improvement.

Windows 10 on the other hand does not feel like an improvement over 7 at all. 7 was great for its time but no longer competes with either Ubuntu or MacOs. UX I know is subjective but frankly I think 10 looks ugly as sh*t. Both Ubuntu and MacOS look miles better and are far much more responsive to user input.

Simple things like scrolling around windows are clunky and stutters in windows vs. perfectly smooth in the others. And then there is the frequent stutter where the UX just stops for 1/4 - 1/2 a second.

If I had to use Windows I would use 7 but I cant think of a reason why other than for games. Even MS Office (which is a great product) runs perfectly on Linux using Wine as do the 2 other Windows only apps I use.

If money was no object I'd buy a MacBook pro but for now I'm installing Ubuntu on my laptop.

Funny you should say that, because just recently I installed the latest Mint, Peppermint and MX-16 and I had the exact opposite experience. Scrolling was jerky/stuttery. (I was installing different versions to see which I would go with...but in the end decided to stick with Win 10 :o )

I installed the latest Mint on the laptop and although it looks nice...it just doesn't feel as responsive as Win 10...so, I don't know.
(The laptop is totally over spec'd for Mint, so it's not a resource issue.)

Been a while since I used Mint but back then found XFCE to be the best. Cinnamon was just not mature and sometimes froze a bit. Sadly while its 100x better than it used to be Linux still has the occasional issue with some hardware.

Nowadays Unity is mature enough for me to not bother too much with the derivatives - Ubuntu itself works just fine (and smoothly) - at least on my hardware :-)

I'll definitely keep that in mind for next time! :)

Windows updates have been failing to install for months on Win 10. I have resorted to blocking updates.
So much for the much vaunted security and technology.

Can't say I've had many issue with W10, except I had to dig around to disable the automatic updates which just restarts your PC willy-nilly.

Can delay the restart for up to a week. Worked great for me.

You can also set it to only notify you of updates like on older versions of windows and then manually download/install them when you want to. Don't think this works in the home version though.

I do the same on Pro and would really like to know if it works on Home. I've been too lazy to install it just to test...

Plug Windows 10 laptop into my home network. Open Windows Explorer and click on Network. Takes 10 minutes to show me my network.
Go to my Win 7 computer, open Windows Explorer, click on Network, Windows 10 laptop instantly appears on my network.

Have had zero issues with windows 10...

I honestly think it's the best OS Microsoft have released since XP. All you guys are getting now on Windows 7 are the security updates and none of the cool new stuff Microsoft is working on

Security Updates?

Getting little bit more with updates - 'telemetry' - a spying software (similar to the spyware found on Windows 10).
