Windows 7 Professional 64 bit question

I've done probably about 10 or 12 times. Always worked. If your check out this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824952.aspx
you'll see that this is not a hack or mod but an official recognised method published by Microsoft. It will work. Only reason that it would fail is if you did something wrong.

I haven't done it that many times, probably once or twice, but when I did it didn't work. So like you said, I must have done something wrong then. I'll try it again sometime :)

I combined this method and DISM once to build a DVD that had Windows 7 64bit+32bit+Windows Server 2008R2 all on the same DVD. It started up as per normal but had a huge list of options to choose which OS version to install. Worked great.

Having read through these rude and ill-mannered replies, I will give this forum a miss from now on. If I have software that does not run on Windows 8, I would not have bothered to submit a post

I did not intend to sound harsh towards you specifically. I apologize if I sounded offensive, but that was not my intention with my comments.

My intention is to give you the correct information based on facts and to save you spending money where you don't need to waste it. That is all.

See my intentions for what it is.

yeah you did come forth a little harsh :p

OK so I'm back... The OP :)

With downloaded an official iso and everything installed fine using the cdkey that I extracted using a software tool. I extracted the cdkey from the original install before I nuked it.

All drivers are working except now one small problem... It won't activate. :(

It gives an error and tells me to pass off. It doesn't do the usual option where it gives you a choice to activate over the phone (where it gives you an installation id)

So now I'm at a loss here... What now?

What computer is it? Is it a brand name machine eg. Acer, Dell etc or is it a custom build?

Apologies for the delay.

It's an Asus laptop, previously mentioned in the thread. P550CA if I remember correctly

Came with win 7 on it and we extracted the key and did a fresh install without all the recovery partition crap (wasted ssd space)

But now it won't activate so we don't know what to do

You do not get product keys embedded in the BIOS. The only thing in the BIOS related to activation is the SLIC 2.1 marker. The OP just needs to install Windows Professional without any loaders or cracks. Once in Windows, install the relevant Asus OEM digital certificate and matching OEM SLP key. This will then activate Windows according to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn502540.aspx

If the OP is still unsure, send me a PM and i'll provide clearer help.

Thanks, I'll have that slice of humble pie with a glass of milk :). It's completely out of my knowledge area this, clearly so. I've only seen Windows 8 Laptops with this issue and when contacting their Support departments all they had to say was the Product key was embedded in the Bios, hence my advice. The only way for us to get these machines running was to use original install media.

For the sake of sharing information and avoiding future confusion on the matter. Would you mind posting the clearer help in the thread as well?

This looks good. Let me read the details and will revert ASAP

Thank you

My knowledge on Microsoft's activation technologies start from the Windows XP era till Windows 7. I studied up a bit on Windows 8 but got bored because they locked it up too tight. ;)

Windows 7 activates using more or less 3 methods:

1. Retail/DSP type activation that works by generating a machine code based on your hardware combined with your unique product key. (Typically when someone buys Windows 7 from a shop or bought it with a qualifyng piece of hardware.)

2. Volume activation via KMS (typically in large companies.)

3. OEM activation using a marker in the BIOS that verifies the existence of a matching certificate and key that will be found on the recovery media supplied with a computer (typically when you buy a brand name computer e.g. Asus, Lenovo, Acer etc.

For the purpose of clearing this up, i’ll briefly explain method 3:

When you buy a brand name PC , the PC is supplied to you already activated. This is achieved by the manufacturer using a tool that adds a special marker to the BIOS that identifies it as a brand name PC. The manufacturer ensures that the computer is supplied with recovery software, either in a recovery partition or as CD/DVD’s (a while back). These DVD’s contain a digital certificate that's specific to that manufacturer and therefore cannot be used on another brand name without reverting Windows to trial mode. When Windows detects the BIOS marker, it automatically installs this certificate and a product key for that specific version of Windows. This means that if you install Windows 7 Pro, then you need a Pro key. However, this key is a special OEM key and only works with this method of activation. Also, this key can be used on any brand of OEM PC, as long as it matches the Windows version. Once the certificate and key is installed, then Windows activates without need of being on the internet or phoning.

This means that you can use this method to install Windows 7 on your OEM PC and thereby remove all the bloatware that the OEMS love to fill up you computer with. Clean instal, zero bloatware, activated and fully legal.

I'm not going to post links to the keys or certificates here because i'm not going to get involved with people attempting to use this method for piracy. Google can be used for more information.

You will need only a Windows 7 DVD. I'll send you the exact commands etc once you send me the PM. For interest, those commands are not just for installing certificates and keys but also for deactivating Windows, re-arming Windows (to get additional trial days) remove existing certificates and keys and a whole list of other crap.

Feedback:

I'd like to report back here, that I am very thankful to @vinodh for all the time and effort he took to help me

he used teamviewer to get into the PC and we chatted over Skype so he could explain what he was doing.

Many thanks to him, and I owe him big time.

Very much in the true spirit of this forums main purpose, not like all the crap that goes down in OT and CA
