Windows 7 release dates

Despite the good reviews for the Win 7 beta, I'm not sure if they're going to add the usual "hidden features" (read bugs) when they add all the changes.
I don't think rushing this release out in order to try keep market share is going to help them if it is in any way buggy as, was seen with Vista, if the software is dodgy, the users won't actually use it.
This was quite a surprise to M$ as users had never done that to them before on such a large scale.

Tjun this is basically vista that they have sped up, there is not much for them to get right as vista had everything right apart from the performance factor, so i would imagine this OS is ready to go already.

Does make sense to release the final version before the beta expires. I for one don't want to go back to XP.

Agree on the Netbook issue - why would why I want to put a 8yrs old OS (even though it is bug-free) that was not designed for appliances (cause thats what a Netbook is) when I can rather install an OS that was designed for my hardware / architecture?

While LINUX does not have the market share on Netbooks, this is the market where it has the largest representation. When people see my Ubuntu on my Netbook, they then get interested. Many users are still using Linpus on theirs.

Hey, I'm an Ubuntu-fanboy but Win7 will give my OS the competition and kick it needs and we all win at the end of the day.

windows 7 is just as over rated as vista was. All the major frame work advancements have already been shoved into vista. So windows 7 is a glorified service pack with a new name. Its bloated, i've played with the CTP and Beta. There is nothing impressive about it at all.

i wish they implemented the thing builds in the longhorn lab 6 series :( now that would have been cool

As I understand it it will release at around October. Any Vista bought after July 2009 will be upgradable to Windows 7 at no cost to the customer.

LOL is there actually a version of windows that is not bloated?

Well that does not help much at all. Windows 7 is basically a service pack. I should get a free upgrade. I hate VISTA

I have been using Windows 7 beta on both a fast dual core 64bit computer as well as an old 2001 model 1.3Ghz PC with 1GB RAM. It works like a dream and this might actually be the first windows I buy (depending on how good the VLK cracks are ofcourse) :p

haha...win7 is impressive in comparison to well vista...but thats like saying KFC might be healthier than KFC, I use windows 7 currently on my gaming PC and sure works okay for that but if I want to work I go to my Linux (gentoo) partition because in the end no matter what anyone says your own custom compiled kernel will still perform better at the tasks you set it up for.
Also hope and pray that the next distro continues in its tradition of out classing windows what performance is concerned, as I whould really love to believe that it whould grow to become the platform of choice for end-users at a corporate level.
But sadly I doubt if ubuntu whould be able to win over the windows end-users hearts unless they really revitalise and rethink the cosmetic side of the distro, because judging by forums it seems as though allot of people are complaining about gnomes "outdated" look. So lets hope that maybe ubuntu/gnome can conquer that front aswell as continuing their work at interoperability for all the sods who doesnt want fidle around with wine to much...
But this is sure as hell going to be an interesting year what OS's is concerned. ;)

Ubuntu looks horrible lol, no wonder it performs so well :), when you look that bland and boring i am sure you won't consume much resources :).

I don't think that Microsoft need to hurry. They should rather get it right. I don't think that Ubuntu is going to get that much better in 12 months. Ubuntu is fine as it is now. A little ugly out of the box but it works. The releases don't seem to change that much from an average user's point of view. Unless they radically change the UI or add some really outstanding whizz bang user facing features I don't think that many people will care. At the moment it is reliable, boring, stable and it works but that is not really going to change the world.

To most non technical people the computer is still Microsoft and the Internet is Google...

How did the internet work before search engines I have forgotten!

The only thing MS is taking time with is its new anti piracy schemes that will be broken in the first week I love the Russians not that I support piracy I just don't like monopolies.
