Windows 7 - Updates/tips/tricks/secrets/etc

i bought Windows 7 Professional installation disc on the weekend but am not sure if i should install it as i don't know what will happen to my info on Windows XP. I know it says i must backup all my info on my PC but still i am worried that i will do something wrong and I will lose all my information.

Is it really worth it?
just back up your stuff, so its not on the HDD/partition you want to install on, Win7 cannont upgrade form XP

Tpex, I have 2 harddrives i think one is like 40 gigs and the other is 20gigs and the 20 gig has basically junk on it, would it be possible to convert that hard drive to windows 7 as a test run?

yep, I think win7 only needs about 7 gb

hmm ok would i have to change the drives in the BIOS section so when i reboot i am on that drive? (thats the only way i know to get to it unless i go through MY COMPUTER etc etc)

no just choose the 20gb when you install win7, and you will get dual boot option when you start up your PC

aah ha thanks buddy if something goes wrong, tell everyone it was great knowing all of you.

when I want to search for something it searches the whole damn HDD, and only gives me some filters afterwards...

Just open the location you want to search before you start typing in the phrase. It will then only search that location and not the whole HDD. I actually like this function and the indexing.

Pointless if you do want to search the whole HDD, but I usually I do the above anyway. Got most of my stuff organised.

i attempted to install Windows 7 professional but got cold feet and might just stick with XP for now. why does my box say ACTIVATION RESTRICTIONS. DISTRIBUTION AND REQUIRED ACTIVATION MUST OCCUR IN MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA?

They often restrict software to different zones...

[DISCLAIMER: I'M A OS X FAN, SO THESE MIGHT ONLY BE BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WINDOWS VERY WELL]
Me and one of my friends were on a roadtrip/worktrip last week. We had a very nice and slim notebook, with Win7. And i must say that Win7 sucks more than i thought it would. (Even if you look past those fugly tick and cross buttons on the popups)

1) We were taking alot of photos/vids and Windows couldn't import them all, it said that some were "corrupted" (we got past this by dragging the folder from the memorycard direcly onto the desktop)

2) resizing images are a PAIN!! to say the least. We struggled for half an hour to find out how to do this.

There's a couple more complaints but these are the main ones. Windows can't seem to do anything without other software.

The feature that i like the most (maybe the only one) is the window auto-resize.

Ps. We had NO problems importing the files when we connected it to a OS X machine without the need of 3rd party software.

Hi All

I moved to Windows 7 this weekend. At first glance it just seems like Vista with slightly faster booting.
What is it that makes 7 great? What am I missing here?

Also, please could anyone post a link to where I can download executables of the updates, so that should I ever need to reinstall, I won't be waisting too much cap on it.

Shot,
Cleric

Aero shake
Areo peek
Windows xp mode
Windows taskbar

Looking good. Keep em coming.

EDIT: Update
Tip: To customize the right-click send to context menu, type "shell:sendto" in the windows explorer address bar to add or remove items.

Also...Keeping in shift while right clicking on a file or folder gives you additional options (such as copy as path, which is quite handy) and additional send to locations.

I found that Windows 7 has a better user experience than its predecessors.
I found that it had better native media support. (more codecs)
just cant bother to list them all. sorry :(

some tools that I've had good encounters with is yamisofts windows 7 manager. An all in one maintenance utility (BTW you can use it for more than that). You heard of it?
Windows 7 Manager (32-bit) 64-bit also available.

Don't know how to backup your windows updates (unless you download them individually, but with some you cant download an .exe) so they don't need to be re-downloaded after a re-install.

Hope this helps.

Just don't update ur Windows unless you visit a lot of strange (I'm sure u can figure out what I mean) sites.

1. Just hold off till SP 1 comes out. Reason: updating multiple times will actually slow the OS down by itself as the system files themselves get fragmented and disk degfragmenter does not do system files. Unless you get a specialist defragmenter like Perfectdisk.

2. Avoid installing a new graphics driver everytime a new one comes out. Check the change log if the driver does not do any improvemnets for your card or does not improve any programs or games that you own than you can probable hold off till the next one. Again this saves ur cap and also prevents problems like un-installing the driver and having a problem after installing the new one which sometimes happens.

3. What you can do is run auto-update to check for updates but not to download them. Than check which ones you might need eg .Net framework 4 or silverlight.

4. Disable all programs that autoupdate themselves. Why do you really need java to check for updates every 15 min anyway? Or adobe to check every day?

5. Best way to speed up a slow PC whos hard drive is full. Get an external and move stuff you don't use often on external. eg movies; updates; even your entire music collection. My laptop was super slow till I moved most of my junk onto an external. I think it ectend my laptop life for like the next 5 years or something.

Wish regard to that, I'm just about to redo my family's laptops because of the issue with them always having fragmented files and all of Dell's bloatware which has slowed my father's laptop down to a slow crawl when browsing the net for some reason.

I have also noticed that every laptop I've had which has an Intel processor has very poor web performance for some reason?? Every AMD system I've had always flies on general desktop processing. Not sure if it's the way my family uses the computer or what but it's just what I've observed.
Also only ever owned one Intel system :D

On another note, I would also rather wait for SP1 to come out and then slipstream it into the Windows installation to avoid fragmentation altogether.

I'll bet my left one he's installed Rapport...

Slowness in particular task usually implies a problem with that task. In this case Surfing the net. I slinked to specific browsing eg e-mails or video streming or is it just general.

You should probable run your browser and find a site that generally always loads slow. Than disable all add-ons. and than see if it loads faster...if it does thans its the add-on.. if not than its probalble your browser it self. Than download and install an alternate browser and try that if and if still slow than its probable your connection. Alot of effort but generally worth the effort and feeling of satisfaction if you fix it ur self :)

Let us know if this helps.
