Normally the beauty of VLC is that it works right out of the box. On 64 bit Windows 7, playback quality is noticeably reduced.

Google tells me this is a common problem and suggests various codec packs - but my experience with them generally involves virii and catastrophic data loss.

Anyone have any other fixes?

Interestingly enough, I noticed similar behaviour with Crystal Player, my media player of choice. It was like no postprocessing happens at all on the video stream it was merely 'zoomed' when fullscreen, thus very blocky

I am playing my video through Gomplayer now, a quite good alternative (I base my choices on the ease and speed of fast forward and rewind within files). It seems to have no problem with video quality.

I have not tried VLC on my Win7 x64 install yet, might give that a go and see.

+1 on klite
Win 7 media player uses its own codecs, so it won't be affected by codec pack problems... though you shouldn't have any, they're fairly stable now.

Love Gom.

Liked VLC also initially, but GOM has got one or two things over VLC for my liking.
  • Changing the volume while the movie is playing with a roll of the wheel on the mouse.
With VLC, you'd have to double click and then drag the volume.
  • Double Clicking the mouse in GOM, pauses the movie. (In full screen mode)
  • Capturing frames is also quick and easy in GOM.

Those kinds of things helps me out when lazing in bed and having to quickly check if the doorbell was rung or when answering the phone. :)

This is all true.

I like it so far. Very nice :)

Yeah one click for full screen, it'll have VLC fade into the background. :D
Also while in full screen mode;
Simply moving the mouse over the bottom will show you how far along the movie is, etc.
And moving it up top brings the options to once again have a single click minimizing or closing the window.

  • You can use your mouse to change the volume in VLC too. I do it all the time. Roll of the wheel just as you said.

HJ - you need to get Win 7 codec pack. http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html
