Windows 7: Your Opinion

So what do you think about it? The release is coming up on the 22nd of October. Do you think it has what it takes to meet you standards? (ie: gaming, business etc). Personally I think it has potential, the looks of Vista with Xp's (or better) performance..

Great OS but what I have come to hate is the way the registry (not sure if thats the issue) works, I dont understand why they cannot design a system that doesnt slow down when you install stuff

Ja I was kind of dissapointed, it was like a cleaned up vista that doesn't look as good as vista, at least it faster then vista, but still slower than XP so I'm going to wait till I ether get over 2 gigs of RAM or a directX10 graphics card

Guys this is the development forum do you think we could get some developer comments? There's been plenty of Windows 7 threads from users in the Software forum.

I'm thinking about concerns from developers on having to deploy to a new platform? Since it's a pretty well established fact that the majority of business has skipped Vista (ourselves included), now there's a new platform for us to worry about. And the fact that for a time I'm going to have to deploy to two platforms (yay).

Personally I'm not that excited. Now I have to test on two platforms, and I've got UAC to worry about (meh). The only thing from a developer point of view that is exciting is the new taskbar, as we won't use multi-touch.

I'm keen to hear what your guys concerns are?

Just remember that you are not allowed to write anything to a System folder like program files. If you do then your app would need admin rights which is not a good design. This can result in a few redesigns if you haven't properly designed your app, but there aren't many things that change!

Win Vista/7's handling of the filesystem is a lot better than that of XP so it actually gets easier.

I haven't had the need to do programming for the Windows 7 taskbar, but it looks pretty cool and can add value to your application.

Yeah I kinda know what you're supposed to do. The problem is I've got a rather large VB 6.0 codebase that is still being maintained. It's very naughty and won't play nice with UAC (e.g. using the registry for config). I'm expecting headaches here....

Yip I agree it does look pretty cool. I hope "The Ribbon" (Office 2007 style) doesn't take off. I really dislike that thing...

What about the web developers out there? Surely IE8 is the lesser of three evils (IE8, IE7, IE6), could this be something to get slightly excited about?
