Hey guys.

Okay I cant believe I'm saying this but I stared really liking windows 8...
At first I hated it, but like using it now, its so fast and smooth...
Anyways... I see Windows 8.1 now.
What do you guys think? Anyone who hated it at first, but love it now?

I have these questions:

What is it?
Anyone know?
Is it a completely new OS?
Is is an update I install on top of windows 8?
Is it a service pack of some sort?

:)

Windows 8 has always served me well. And now I have a Windows 8 phone... :)

I am going to give Windows 8.1 a try, I will download the preview sometime this week.

I upgraded to Windows 8 when they released it last year and haven't looked back. I love it and don't miss Windows 7 one bit (probably because I'm not overly attached to a start button)

I don't think I'll be trying 8.1 just now, rather wait for the public release later this year because I hate having to reinstall all my software.

I've made peace with Windows 8, but it's really not geared for using on a company network.

Things that were incredibly easy to do on Windows 7, becomes an absolute pain in the butt with Windows 8 Pro.

Just try to add a network printer, and you'll know what I mean.

It's ok, but from time to time it just wobbles completely, like two days ago my whole Start screen just disappeared magically and I was staring at a big blue screen. Had to restart the pc to get everything back, which is just a major timewaster.

So for home users it might be ok, but if you're an IT manager or specialist, rather stay with Windows 7.

Strange, as of this morning our systems are reporting 271 windows 8 Pc's on our clients' networks and we have had no issues supporting Windows 8. It is far simpler to use then windows 7 if you know how to search.

RE the printer scenario you mention, I can't see how that can have anything to do with Windows 8 if the interface comes from Windows 7 directly?

The animated backgrounds for the start screen are cool - other than that, not much else to report.

With regards to the installing a network printer: I had the opposite. The silly thing found and installed the network printer without asking me. Only after about a week of printing assignments did I realize I hadn't set the thing up myself :p

Somebody drank the cool-aid...

I'm having an issue with a network printer shared from a Windows 8 machine to three laptops running Windows 7, where the printer will show as being offline the entire time. My machine (Windows 8 Pro) doesn't have any issues at all.

I have these questions:

1) What is it?
Anyone know?
2) Is it a completely new OS?
3) Is is an update I install on top of windows 8?
4) Is it a service pack of some sort?

1) Its an update to Windows 8 that significantly changes some GUI elements and updates things like DirectX 11, the networking stack and services like Skydrive.
2) No, it's just an updated Windows 8. Its the same method that Apple uses to keep OS X updated every year.
3) Yes, you can grab the update for free from the Windows store when its out
4) Its effectively the same thing, although this adds and updates services that are critical to the OS' functioning. 8.1 is free for users currently on Windows 8, but expect Microsoft to ask for money when the 8.2 update arrives in late 2014. Apple charges, what, $15 for each update to OS X?

I don't think they'll do that. Windows is after all on an open platform - OS X not so. In fact I fully suspect that there will be some F2P implementation of Windows 9 or 10.

Will there be a free upgrade for everyone with Windows 8.0? Like a SP or the like?

How is Windows an open platform? You have to purchase it to use it, Ubuntu is an open platform :-).

he likes it a lot
Me too, just re-did my main work PC (Macbook Air Boot Camp 5.0533) with a clean ISO install and so far runs like a dream.

Its configured for desktop use (minimal Modern) and after using it a bit I realize how 'old fashioned' Win7 is.
