Windows 8 Consumer Preview

oh BTw you can't log off and log back in...did I miss something??? (I only have one user account on this pc?? could this be the reason?)

Hey Hey

In Metro, click on your user icon, you will see (should see) an option to "sign out"... this is the new log out methinks.

Agree, there's no denying MS's strategic intent is to push Metro (i.e. succeed in the tablet space), but consider why there is a full open to all "Consumer Preview" long before actual final product launch.

In my view largely to test whether their intent is viable in the market. Based on current sentiment I would guess (if MS are sensible) the final shipping Win8 will be fully configurable in Metro or Desktop modes (wouldn't even discount the re-emergence of some kind of mini-Start menu in Desktop mode).

Time will tell, while the tablet space is an ever growing threat to their traditional PC business, they can't survive/grow by alienating their current consumer/corporate customer base.

I have not installed the consumer preview but played around with developer preview when it came out.

At that time it was said that the only reason you couldn't default to the normal desktop with start menu was to force people to try out metro. I think all this hoopla about metro is stupid because you won't be forced to use it in the final release.

Good to know!

So if you remove metro what exactly is different about windows 8 because it looks like windows 7?

Does it run faster?

Yes, it is very agile and quick; boot up speeds are phenomenal! office programs actually start so much quicker (from cold boot).

@Elementals--just installed the ViStart orb--it works well on W8CP. With this and with Metro UI also going away (if killadoob is right) then nothing spectacular with W8 vs.W7 UI. Except for speed.

Well that is if you exclude all the other benefits then.

  • Much lighter Kernel,
  • Better resource, memory and power vs W7,
  • Better Security (MSE now built in),
  • More powerful task manager,
  • Able to install and boot from a USB,
  • Single sign on,
  • Access to new Windows Runtime API,
  • Integrated skydrive,
  • ARM support,

And loads more, its not all about Metro.

Yeah, ARM is going to be big. I can't wait for people to hack it so that you can use the desktop and legacy apps.... watch me play WoW on my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Just watch me.

in the people app, can you guys see any facebook or twitter updates?
