Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Reverting back to Windows 7, Windows 8 looks good but its not ready for something like my laptop or PC.

EDIT: Yes I am weak, I cannot wait for the updates to fix the constant hanging, happens in IE10 and Chrome :(

Oh Ye of little faith and much experience ! :p

It's a love hate relationship. Been using their products and developer tools for 25+ years, and they just seem to screw up so often. I couldn't believe the dumping of VB6 for .Net. Won't ever trust them again. Now I'm doing Linux, Android and LAMP in addition to my old skills. Fools!

Youch! ... For me, I have a good feeling about Windows 8. Vista early betas were awful, resource hogs and unstable. Windows 7 early betas were light on resources and stable. Vista for me sucked, Windows 7 shines. Windows 8 has the same feel as early 7 betas. The Consumer Preview of 8 is rock solid on my machine, apart from one Wireless device not responding after resume. It all just works. I have no gripes with Metro... I can use it, it does not get in my way.

In my limited experience... I feel that Windows 8 will be great... just as Windows 7 was / is. There is still a fairly long way for Ms to go with it before a RC and final, and I suspect that a lot of the irks will be addressed by then.

I hope !

EDIT:

I am viewing it from my lowly end-user / consumer vantage point.

Forcing Metro onto the desktop is going to cause a revolt. It's not suitable. They tried the same sh it with .Net. Fsck off, I'm not your pawn.

I did not like the consumer preview at all.

This thing took me ages to Install (close to 2 hours) Windows 7 takes under an 1 hour with me. Windows 8 had to "prepare" like 4 or 5 times when I was installing it.

Next this thing takes long to boot up, longer than Windows 7.

Also this thing was slow.

I was disappointed, Microsoft said it would boot faster, but this was not the case with me.

My PC is an Intel Core i7 2630QM, 6GB DDR3, 500GB HDD so it cant be my PC lacking.

Windows 8 is the next Windows Vista

The Metro thing is cool, but I do not think it will be best on computers, unless you have one of them fancy touch screen's.

I have made up my mind; im not going to upgrade to Windows 8, rather stick with Windows 7 until something shows up again.

Windows 8 is very confusing, it will take the average pc user some time to learn it.

Viva ! Ama-Start Orb... Oh Where to ? :D

I growled a lot after my upgrade and had to trawl all over to find things... but now that it has all been pinned to the start menu, my little Metro thingy is OK. The stuff I use is within a click away... shut down options also 1 click away. The Metro Apps I hardly use... so no comment there.

I remember the HOWLS of protest when XP came out and the start menu changed... methinks it is a bit of this too here with Metro... perhaps.

My biggest gripe with it at the moment is the bladdy status pane now being a vertical thing on the left of the explorer frame... grrrrrrrr... preferred it on the bottom as in 7.

Pffffft.

I am their Pwn.

Eish ! 2 hours. That is what an upgrade usually takes! A fresh install took me 20 minutes.

It boots much quicker than Windows 7 on my laptop... instantly noticeable... but it is more smoke & mirrors methinks, as once I get onto my desktop, it takes the same amount of time as Windows 7 for it to "settle" as such.

Your i7 should fly ! I am on a 4 year old Core 2 Duo laptop and it is very, very quick.

I still use XP on my laptop, it's start menu and toolbar is better imo. My games PC has 7 because I have to. So I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but Metro on the desktop is a no.

Windows 8 on a tablet laptop or pc with touch screen will be rather awesome :D

Heheheh... I was working with another Windows 7 laptop just now, and I kept hovering the mouse near the bottom left corner of the screen and waiting for the Metro pop-up!

Should I try windows 8 again, this time fresh install? Is there any way I can backup my whole system (windows 7) onto an HDD, then Install Windows 8, then when Im done, re install windows 7 with the back up?

I dont know why mine took a long time to boot up, it was very strange. Yes I did an upgrade where it keeps all my personal files, settings, etc.

Will Microsoft Make Windows 8 Beta (which will take up the features of a Windows 8 Ultimate)??

Q: Can I get a Intel MyWi-fi Technology for Windows 8?? The windows 7 one didn't work well on windows 8.

Too little too late.

Not to mention too the price of a slate... insane!

You could do a system image of your Windows 7 onto an external drive, then install Windows 8... and then restore the image to go back. You can use the Windows 7 imaging tool in its backup options or the free Macrium Reflect for this.

The only issue I am having is with my wireless adapter... so will have to wait for driver updates. Graphics just got an update and sorted an issue out there... maybe download the latest windows driver for your adapter before doing the install ?

The only schlepp with a clean install is all the re-installation of the software.

Perhaps if you are having issues, it may be advisable to hold off until the next beta ? You don't want to have to fight with a machine you are using daily.

Edit: Link for Macrium Reflect free imaging software... http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Why don't you run it inside a VritualBox VM 1st, you can even run the Emu as full screen to play around with it. Only then decide if you want to do a full install

Wait till you run dual screen with your secondary on the left, hovering in the corner is a bitch of note, mouse forever move across to the other screen.

Hahahaha... thankfully, my dual sits on the right!

But I have been unsuccessfully trying to grab the top of the Windows 7 desktop and pull it down, also trying to get the charm bar to materialise has also proved to be a bit of a Windows 8 habit in Windows 7.

I think Windows 8 has me firmly in its grasp!
