Windows 8 Developer Preview

Multiple desktops with nView = broken.

It installs OK, and does the multiple desktop switching, but knocks out the taskbar and Metro UI+corner hover thing.
Nor really useful in Win 8.

Those wanting multiple desktops need to continue their search....

Windows 8 is terrible. I would much rather use linux full time. I open IE from the Start menu thingy(metro) or whatever it is called. The only way I can find to exit this is to hold mouse in left bottom corner and go back to start again, once i go onto the desktop and i press alt tab, i see IE is still open. Only way to permanently exit it is from task manager...WTF. Is there a procedure im missing? Also the shutdown button is hidden away takes 10 clicks to shut it down. Its like going back to Vista, Im not sure if windows ME or Vista was worst, but this one sure beats it! Hope to see some changes. I skipped Vista and seems like I'll be skipping 8 as well. But let me not judge it too soon. I will play around with it tomorrow again.Maybe im feeling better after a good night rest.

Double-post sorry. Good thing was the time it took to install and booted up. Install took 12-13mins and booting up is the fastest ever.

Pressing Alt+F4 (over and over) will close all windows and also offer a Shutdown dialogue box.

And here I was thinking MS were trying to improve the GUI... Can you see Grandma looking up her "Handy Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts" list every time she gets stuck?

The idea of 'closing apps' seems so embedded in people, because the only reason to 'close apps' was to save resources and make it available for other apps.

In the Android world, you don't need to close apps anymore, because the OS deals with resources properly. This actually makes it easier on the user, because now they don't need to know about all the available RAM/CPU/GPU etc.

Windows SUSPENDS apps not in use and makes all its resources available to the system.

Which brings me to this:

Your grandma, doesn't need to close apps no more. So you don't have to explain to her why her computer is running so slow.

looks cool. where can i find old programs like notpad etc?
Try typing "notepad" ;)

Even on my phone i close all the apps i dont want running. And once I play a game in lets say 1year and its lagging, Im gonna check for open programs and close them anyways.

Guys Windows 8 is not Android--it is just trying to copy Android--nothing new here. Grandma will have to catch up. (Windows 8 GUI will sell more Linux-based OS's IMHO), so well done to Microsoft for making this level of thinking mainstream.

is there any place i can download windows virtual machine on a south africa server? I have telkom Internet 1GB (1GB Blended + 10GB local usage) and i have finished my blended cap data.

Andriod might be in a fix due to too much piracy

Would love to pick that post apart, and calling it FUD, but seeing that its in the wrong thread I'll just pick the 1st sentence:

"Android’s applications are open-source and thanks to its loose authentication instruments piracy began taking its toll."

Android applications is not Open Source in fact many of them are closed, the operating system's source code may be available for download but again not all of it see Honeycomb as an Example.

Hello,

I need to reinstall the OS on my laptop. I thought I would pop W8 on it. Is that a really stupid idea? I need to be able to do a little bit of work on it. AutoCAD, Sketchup, Word, etc... Dropbox would also need to work.

I have a fairly robust backup solution, so I'm not worried about that. Just being able to get stuff done if need be.

My opinion, but I wouldn't use it for work at this stage, it's not stable enough...
