Windows 8 = disaster

Windows 8 is quite possibly the worst implementation of a desktop OS I have come across. You have to right click to do everything...
What you need is a 1990s Mac. They were made for people who get confused by having two mouse buttons.

All I'm asking for is for MS to give me a choice when I install the OS - or when I use it for the first time - to choose to use the Modern UI or not. If not then it never comes up in any way unless I go to settings and activate it. If I chose yes, and I don't want it any more I should be able to go to settings and completely de-activate the Modern UI. Simple. Give me a choice.

There is a lot of nice things in Windows 8 (task manager for example) that I want (so no going back to 7), but the Modern UI just doesn't gel well with a non-touch screen PC/laptop. Most people will rather go for a dedicated tablet (like the iPad) than go for what MS is trying to create here: a hybrid jack-of-all-trades compromise on both sides OS.

My one device is for content creation and for that I WANT TO USE A MOUSE.

My tablet is for content consumption and for that I want a touch screen with larger easy to tap zones.

Hybrids do not sell well. A heavy thicker tablet is out if I can have a light thin iPad. A long battery life is crucial on a tablet. A tablet must remain cool and comfortable to hold for long period.

MS, you are jumping too far ahead to early. Let your RT tablet environment establish itself first with apps and a Modern UI. Then bring that as an option to PC/laptop users, and then - if they are really taking the bait - hook users into what you now sell as Windows 8. Step by step.

The current approach is arrogant and seen as an effort to steal tablet market share by forcing the massive international Windows users base to get into the MS tablet way ... and throw away the iOS and Android tablets. N.o.t.g.o.i.n.g.t.o.h.a.p.p.e.n!

You don't have to use Metro. As soon as it boots press the button labelled Desktop. Your interaction with Metro from then on should be very minimal.

Will Microsoft ever acknowledge that they messed up big time with Windows 8?

Apple gains new clients. Since buying a Dell XPS 13 when Windows 8 was released I had to reinstall Windows 8 three times due to problems that couldn't be resolved otherwise. The latest problem now is that my USB ports won't read external drives (USB flash drives, external HDD, phone, tablet, etc) half of the time ... plug in ... pull out ... plug in again ... repeat cycle ... oh there it sees it now. Nonsense like that all the time. If it is not this then it is that. With every new installation comes different problems. It's by far the worst OS experience I've ever had.

The Modern UI is a disaster of note. I run Start8 and Fences to help rid me of Modern UI but why not give users the option not to use the touch friendly rubbish on a non-touch PC? And when it throws you into Modern UI it's a mystery to close an app and get back to the Desktop environment. Why Microsoft? Why try to force us to get used to a really bad idea in order to sell your tablets? You deserve to be punished by the market for this arrogant mess you sold us. Someone, or a committee of someones, in Ballmerville lost their minds ... completely.

Is this a new machine, qualified for Windows 8 or an upgrade or custom built machine?

Reason for asking is that it would appear that your USB drivers are broken and hardware drivers are written by the device manufacturer, not Microsoft. I would suggest that you delete al your USB devices in device manager, power off the machine, the power on and reboot. If your USB device is registered with Microsoft it should be updated automatically, if not, visit the manufacturer's site and download a Windows 8 driver.

I've been using windows8 for a while and loving it. I find full screen start menu to be a bit redundant as I don't really need apps. Programs work just fine. But I love how efficient it is. I find this to be the most lightweight, optimized windows so far. It's extremely snappy and the way it sorts the RAM is brilliant. So the code is solid but they should rethink the layout. OP's problems sound to be more hardware than software. Those could be faulty ports. Dell is known for having rubbish build quality.

My XPS 13 was bought with Windows 7 on it and then upgraded to Windows 8 within the first week. After every reinstall I went to Dell's drivers website and downloaded and installed everything listed for Windows 8. I also install all the MS updates. I do all of this before I start loading other software. I'm very meticulous with such things.

Unfortunately with every new OS installation came different issues. This time it is USB. Last time the machine would just hang and nothing would get it back running without a hard reboot (which I hate doing as it results in other issues). The USB ports worked perfectly the previous times. A new thing with every reinstall. Next time the USB ports will work but my screen might do weird things.

Not build for Windows 8 no, but Dell do offer specific drivers for Windows 8 for this device.

But my biggest issue is with Modern UI that pops up at times even when Start8 is used and configured to keep it away. I want it not to live in the background at all. It must get out completely.

As I said there are good things with 8. Much faster boot times is awesome. I wouldn't go back to 7 but as I said ... please just give me a choice at the start not to have Modern UI installed/configured.

Installed Win 8 on a 2008 Core 2 Duo Panasonic Toughbook. It's not faster than XP but way better than Vista. So it has some good points.

Finding the control panel is a mission in itself
Maybe you have a fake version with half the code removed? On all my Win8 systems, Control Panel is easier than any previous version: mouse to bottom-left, r-click for quick menu, and click Control Panel. Two clicks no matter where you are. It's so easy and convenient.

Why not give it a try on a real system?

edit: oh, and try pinning your Win32 apps to Taskbar, and tidy up Start.

Yeah I like.

I wonder if more of this not what Dell has in mind and why they want to go private, as such a strategic move to turn Linux into a viable desktop and Mobile OS is a move the Board and shareholders won't approve.

With Ubuntu the "official" OS of China Dell might be onto something here as money and power is shifting East. Maybe the company wants to focus on Linux driven hardware as opposed to Windows machines. There is for sure a need for this as a lot of people are not happy with the direction MS is taking with Windows. I've always wanted Linux to be a true competitor to Windows and OS X. If only the large software developers will make their products for Linux too. A move by Dell in such a direction may just start such a "revolution". China is helping to make it happen so there will be a market.

The great OS kickback has begun :p

Interested to see how this all pans out. Other companies have put out linux specific machines but not with this level of specs and FOSS customisation behind them.

Yep. I hope that kickback is for real (becomes a reality). We really need more alternatives, and I am a strong believer that all levels of Government should support open source (Linux and products like Libre/Open Office).

Ubuntu's walled garden will be no better than Apple's - it will most definitely be a lot worse. Being an "official" anything in China ....

Well, if windows 8 is a disaster Microsoft can give their revenues from it to me?....

I like windows 8. I really can't understand the problems some people seem to have with it.

Ubuntu's "walled garden"? WTF? The whole idea is NOT to have another "walled garden" but to live in wide open spaces.
