I recently got myself a Dell XPS13 ultrabook and upgraded to Windows 8 a few days later. In Windows 8 the anti-virus is now again part of Windows Defender so automatic updates must be enabled to get the regular definition updates BUT my machine has a problem with two very large (500MB) updates that are repeatedly downloaded but fails to install (on reboot ... gets to 15% every time and then hangs). I have now wasted tons of data with these updates that fails to install. Problem is MS states that they are important updates (which cannot just be ignored ... but they just wont install beyond 15%).

Anyone else having similar issues?

As things stand I am beyond gatvol with Windows 8. It is by far my worst Windows experience ever ... and I've been running Windows machines since day 1.

Problem files:

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2769165)

Download size: 163.3 MB

Update type: Important

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2770917)

Download size: 142.9 MB

Update type: Important

DISABLE Automatic Updates. Wait for Service Pack then update.. :) Never had any problems. :)

Problem now is that Anti Virus Windows Defender is part and parcel of the auto updates. If I disable auto update my virus definitions don't come.

For someone who uses 3G/HSPA data this is a frikkin expensive nightmare.

Manually download the updates from the MS website, the Knowledge Base download centre should have those updates for manual install so just input the KB######## into the search bar.

Same problem even when installing seperately downloaded files. 15% ... then fail.

Do a Google on that hotfix and see if it conflict with any other hotfixes - if it does remove any conflicting hotfixes and try again.

Got the problem child: Windows8-RT-KB2770917-x64

Only got it installed after disabling all non-Microsoft services. Took me hours to get this right. No way Microsoft!!!

I'm trying hard to get along with it ... but it is a half-baked thing that requires patience and tenacity at times.

Once you realize that, when you strip all the metro crap away, you're left with Windows 7 Basic, you feel very cheated by MS.

That's when you get out your Windows 7 Home Premium/Professional/Ultimate disc and restore dignity to your computer. ;)

Naaah. Every windows is just an upgraded copy of windows 3.1 :p

ROFL!!!

Remember, Windows 3.1 wasn't an OS, cos it needed DOS to run. It was merely an app, running on top of DOS.

So what I said is true then. Windows 8 is an app running on top of windows 7 :D

It is clear to see where MS is going with Windows ... only problem is: We do not necessarily want to go there. They reached a fork in the road and turned left. Many of us prefer going right. So now many of us are at a place where we either go left with them, or get off to go right. Problem for many is that we have invested so much in Windows software and hardware already that one feels intimidated to go left against one's own wishes. This is where the abuse part comes in for me. MS knows people won't have a real choice but to go along to a destination many don't want to go to. I do not want a Windows tablet and phone. I am already investing elsewhere. But MS is pushing their ecosystem down our throats using their PC advantage. Abusive. Now I sit with a tablet OS on my laptop. Ugly. Flat. Huge blocks/tiles. Made for fingers not mice. And when you load third party apps to hide Modern UI the Windows updates fail to install (what happened to me).

MS did not force you to upgrade to Win 8, there was no need to upgrade to that pos.

Win 7 has mainstream support until January 13, 2015, extended support until January 14, 2020.

Beyond windows there's also os x & linux as alternatives.
