Windows 8 problems - Automatic Updates lead to crashing/repair/restart loop

Hi all

Anyone had problems like this? Fresh Windows 8 install on i5/Z77/SSD PC. After installing all drivers and programs etc. and doing an Automatic Update, upon booting up, the PC crashes and/or goes into a repair/restart loop.

I managed to refresh the Windows 8 install and it seems to have rolled back to before the automatic updates were installed. So now it's sitting, wanting to install +-30 updates. Have left AU disabled for now.

Any help or threads/posts discussing this, please? Any specific updates I should ignore so that I can get the majority done?

I had the same problem after a installing windows 8. I ended up doing each update item individually( via the control panel windows updates, not Metro ), and low and behold after about four updates, the list of updates changed and all then went smooth. I reckon one of the updates is not compatible/superseded with another and this causes the issue.

Problem has not reappeared since. Also this did not happen on the wife's PC, only mine?

Did you do one at a time from top to bottom? Were you making system images between each one as restore points? Did you eventually allow all the automatic updates to install once they'd changed, or did you continue doing one by one?
 
At this window with important updates selected. So you suggest I untick all but the top one and keep going one by one?

I went one by one from biggest to smallest, then as soon as the list changed did all. Looking at the list I seem to recall it may have been one of the .Net updates that caused the issue. Windows created restore points after each update automatically.

What's wrong with me? :( I feel such intense happiness whenever I read a thread like this. It's probably has something to do with the fact that I'm still using Windows 7.
 
So many important updates already, and 8 has been out for how long?

Dont Micro****e test their stuff? Or do they use customers for beta testing?
 
I haven't experienced any issues. did all the updates after install, and no problems so far on 3 p.c's.

Hehe touche, but to be fair I remember the same stuck at 30% update loop in the early days of Win7 too.
 
Urrrgh... 1.5GB updates on two new Acer laptops here. I had to delete the soundcard from the device manager before running a few updates else it would get into the repair, reboot loop as well. The updates just keep coming. WTF.

Also, new HP laptop, 1st boot... updates install... reboot, blank screen with mouse visible... owner phones me to telephonically repair... I advise return to place of purchase. No time for new Windows 8 support issues.

Grrrr.

Aaand, zero issues with a new little Gigabyte laptop... Windows 8 780MB+ updates without a hitch.

Eish! Good to hear about the Gigabyte though. Growing quite fond of their value and quality proposition. I will be seeing you soon Sir. :D

Their cheap Pentium B960s seem like OK workhorses. No frills or bling... just work. I almost pulled the fan connectors of the 1st couple when installing extra RAM... Gigabyte have attached the fans to the actual bay panel !! So, remove the panel, yank the fan and cable out of the connector. Eish. Still, cannot complain.

P.S. I have given those HDD screws for the Compaq lappie to Henry...
 
Let me know when they release an update to restore the Start Menu and take away that butt ugly children's interface formerly known as metro.
 
In October last year I bought a new ASUS X54C laptop, pre-installed with Win7. I then took advantage of the MS 'upgrade to Win8 64-bit Professional version. After installing Win8 OS, then updates, I started to have regular BSODs with error descriptions like:

* kernel_security_check_failure
* system_service_exception_....
* worker_thread_returned_ ...
* driver_verifier_detected_violation

Eventually there came a time my laptop would not even boot, so I bit the bullet and did a clean re-install of Win7 from the 5 x restore / recovery DVDs I have fortunately made when I first took delivery of the laptop.

I was never really that happy with Win8, so I am not too disappointed I wasted the R140-odd on the MS upgrade (sic) offer, and am now happily using Win7 again.

I also learnt a useful lesson .. re: backing up my data files, because I lost a lot of photos (about 1000), plus some recent documents / spreadsheets that were in MyDocs on the Win8 install, and not yet backed up to my cloud drive, nor USB.
 
This is what i would do when considering a new OS.

- Wait for hands on use (problematic cases)
- Wait for SP1/2/3 to be integrated to the disk
- Buy it and install
