Windows 8 upgrade version conundrum

So anyway I registered for the whole "buy a new PC between July 2012 and 2013 thing and get Win 8 for R125" but now that the time has come and I run the Upgrade Assistant it tells me that "Sorry, Windows 8 isn't available for online purchase in the country / region you are in". And that's after my email from Microsoft with the promotional code :erm:

Yip, I also get this. I sent them a mail. Plus I asked them if I can do a fresh install as I don't want a four year old installation to be upgraded.

Let us know what they say.

How do they still manage to fuck up the install process? They've been selling operating systems for DECADES FFS

trying that now. Flipping crooks!!! if i new it was an upgrade I would never have bought it.

Rather spare yourself the frustration...atleast you get something now...I guess with the refunding option it might take weeks and fights with them...eish

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe MS is so commercially stupid that they would not release a retail version of W8. Although they are not good okes, they still managed to build a massive company. No company would ever restrict users of competitors (Linux etc) from switching to their own, or how else do they gain market share?

I know some aspects of this have been covered in this thread already, but if MyBB had applied there mind to this article before they published they surely should have realised they were publishing BS?

Well as far as I am aware no purchase has yet been done on my CC so no refund is needed just cancel the damn thing. I wouldnt mind waiting the 4 weeks if I was getting a proper retail install box and not a upgrade option however since it is the run of the mill upgrade option 4 weeks is unacceptable...

From their facebook page :

Groupon South Africa Hi Groupies, the Microsoft Windows 8 release is only the upgrade version, which is the only version that Microsoft has released as of yet. if you have machines running previous versions of Microsoft Windows. The Groupon Mothership.

If i dont get a response in 1 week i will simply instruct VISA to do a reversal of the transaction on my Credit Card. Ive done it before and will continue to do it again with all these bloody crooks. Cant believe I was dooped ino trying to be a good citizen and having genuine stuff and then they go and pull this junk. Who on earth would buy an Upgrade Only Version???!!

Also a point of clarification: even though it is not supposed to be supported, the upgrade assistant allowed me to purchase an upgrade and download the iso even though I am running Win 8 release preview.

I read on some forum that the eventual activation will fail if you do not have a qualifying OS you are installing from, hope I'm wrong for your sakes

They aren't stupid, they did it entirely on purpose. They sell the upgrade as retail, then compare the price with Windows 7's retail price and say "look it's cheaper now lololololololololo"

They don't lock out new users, you can still buy a System Builder copy. They're just being very very sneaky about it.

haha, what an utterly stupid arrangement!

Serves you guys right for trying to be so "voor op die wa!" :p

I'm sticking with Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

Just received confirmation of my Groupon cancellation :

"Good day xxxxxx,

We hereby acknowledge your request and will escalate it to our Refunds Department.

Summary of request: A request for a refund has been made as the product that was ordered was not what the customer believed to have been offered."

Hardly a good deal... kinda feels like Groupon is lying about the savings.
