Windows 8 upgrade version conundrum

Pathetic.. I ran the upgrade assistant from my XP Virtual Machine to test, no dice.. it wants more ram and HDD space (my VM only has 512mb/10gb drive for testing s/w).

Microsoft seem to enjoy making life a PITA. Why can't we just make an account, buy a key, d/l the ISO of our choice like any other shop. FFS.

Presumably you can redownload again later - what happens if your lines drops half way through?

Confirmation email:

Thanks for your order!
This is your receipt - make sure to print or save a copy for your records.
If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here.

The "here" link downloads an exe called Windows8-Setup, so I assume you can resume later.

Final total:

Subtotal $39.99
PromotionBB xxxxxx ($25.00)
Total $14.99

Also got same email at 04:00 and I was too curious so I got up and wanted to start downloading but NO i'm with AfriHost and the MTN networks 105.xxx ip's aren't registered to South Africa yet...

Any idea how to get around this?

Can I upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 8?

Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8, but you'll need to buy Windows 8 as a DVD.

so do you get a win8 'key' when you download the upgrade, or does it just install on existing pc?
what happens if you want to do fresh install? install win7 first then upgrade to Win8 again, or use win7 key to install Win8, if u dont get win8 key?

Awesome! ok - blonde moment. What link did you use to purchase it?

http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/

You must purchase a qualifying Windows 7 PC between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013 to be eligible for this offer. The last day to register and order your Windows 8 upgrade is 28 February 2013.

The installer is downloading it.

I have no idea which version is being downloaded though. Hopefully 64Bit since my version of 7 is 32Bit :erm:

A VPN, perhaps? Or use another account.

But I've gotten this now on IS and my friend also couldn't and he's on MWEB.

Yeah I had a MWEB account which also didn't work so I don't know what to do! I asked Afrihost for a IS account just to DL that but no reply yet!

Sweet. Then I can keep my GroupCon DVD and just get an old XP 32bit key from one of the old laptops at work they're always chucking away.

Everything went better than expected.

I just entered bull**** for the 14.99 of windows and i got a promo code lol :D downloading now.

See my post above. It's probably 32bit dude. Maybe look in your %temp% folder to see if there's a ISO or some big file with a filename that reads x86 or x64 or something.

I'm certain it will be 32bit.

Is going to C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebSetup\Download\BIT42DB.temp it seems. No ISO's

How the hell can you have a previous operating system as a requirement for a brand new one? If I have been running Ubuntu and want to change to Windows 8, I have to buy Windows 7 and then buy a Windows 8 upgrade, or try get my hands on the System Builder version that has a different license.

Makes no sense :-/

You can count on it being the 32 bit version. Microsoft has stated plainly several times that you can't upgrade across architectures using the download method.

Just left Makro.they don't mince words and you're getting the upgrade for R599.
Rather go there at least you get to see the demo and talk to people from Microsoft.
