As far as I understand it, Windows Media Center is a little bit more than just a DVD player :P But expecting people to pay for it in this day and age? Seriously guys, seriously.

Micro$oft had a good thing going for them with Windows 7 being widely received and Windows 8 looking to be a decent upgrade to it...until someone got greedy and started charging for all the extras. Looks like they are taking a page out of Apple's book these days!

I somehow managed to activate Win8 Pro x64 from a clean (formatted HDD) install using my media acquired from Makro.  :D

Clonezilla'd that motherfscker straight after :D

I get to the end of the install and it says it failed, and it just rolls back. Tried twice now with different zip codes. Dunno wtf to do

Fixed my problem. I installed it without using a Microsoft account and it worked fine.

Here's what I did, I'm not 100% sure what made the clean install work for me.

I have the media pack from Makro (32 and 64bit upgrade disks)

1. Formatted my HDD from a Linux usb bootdisk.
2. Booted from the 64bit DVD, ran install, installed Win8, rebooted
3. Upton booting, setup online account (with the email)
4. Activation didn't work, got an error saying the product key is not valid for clean installs.
5. Rebooted and disabled AHCI on my sata so I could install XP Pro
6. Got as far as the product key, found my legit key (boxed retail) but thought buggerit... rebooted
7. Booted my 64bit DVD Win8 again, from the installer I erased my SSD from the drive manager thing during setup.
8. Installed, created anoffline user account
9. Activated fine! Multiple reboots and updates and stuff later, still activated.

So my guess is that if you boot the media and there's Windows on your HDD of some kind, you can format from the installer's drive manager thing and install.

But I'm not 100% sure, just listed all my steps in case it helps.

*shrug*

Don't forget to Clonezilla and make a backup of your PC just after you have installed and activated in case you wanna reload for some reason. My Clonezilla drive image came to 4.3GB. Make sure to user 'powercfg -h off' to disable the hibernation file to make the image smaller.

@Prophet

I also paid $15. (R135).
Went to http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/ , registered my computer, or well details, got the key, which they emailed to me (first a reference number, then I logged in and it sent me a "product key" , called the promo key.
Downloaded the upgrade agent thingy, then AFTER where you enter your cc details, it makes you check your details and ONLY THEN do you get a chance to enter the promo key. I only had R200 on my cc available, just for in case.

--> Free media centre! http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs

I have a solution for anyone that also gets the annoying "Sorry, Windows 8 is not available in your country/region"

*Open Network and Sharing Center
*Set up a new connection or network
*Connect to a workplace
*Use my internet connection(VPN)
*Internet Address - us.justfreevpn.com - Next
*Username - justfreevpn
*Password - 1130
*Check "Remember this Password"
*CONNECT!

Now you will be able to run the Windows 8 upgrade assist without any hasles
except

you need a ZIP code from the US! 11941 ;)

Still cant seem to get it to work. Could it be that im using windows 8 rtm? Shouldnt make a difference imo. Seems microsoft are begging us to pirate it, seeing as its so god damn difficult to buy...

Not having done the download version, but you could at least try running it from a VM running Windows 32/64 depending on what you want.

Got it to work by setting it to xp compatibility. Downloading now :D Does any one know if this 15$ version lets you upgrade your computer?

Is anyone having a problem whereby the Upgrade Assistant is stuck at "Checking Apps and Devices"? What might be wrong here?

It can take a few minutes, just be patient. It took like 1-2 minutes on my ssd, and I didn't even have that much installed.
