Like work in Excell to alter quotes, Photoshop / Freehand etc. to edit a design here or there, and mail Word documents on the fly... (all compatible with my client's software) now that's portable usefulness. i-pod for the entertainment, netbook for portable productivity! Apple missed the boat there...

Sadly, they didn't. Jobso wants to make more money by selling ITUNES content, books, subs to newspapers and iPhone apps. It's a perfect platform for that with no distractions like work to get in the way of consuming more content. It's as if SONY put a fully functional word processor, email program, browser, photo editing app, etc with their PS3s. People would buy fewer games because they'd be doing productive things instead. :)

the fact that you still use freehand doesn't add to your credibility ;)

i can only speak from personal experience:

i've done billboards (big ones) and multi-page layouts in indesign and countless photoshop print and web layouts on pc, 32 and 64bit.
i've worked side by side with guys who use macs on the same project.
i've worked in interactive agencies who only use pc's.
i've worked in print agencies who only use macs.
friends of mine do 3d and 2d rendering and compositing for tv using maya, softimage and ae on pc.
an ex-client of mine ran an audio production studio only on pc.
i have an industrial design, 3 interior design and 3 architect friends using autocad and revit on pc.

if you want the apple i-suite and aren't buying adobe software, great for you.
but if you're buying creative suites, the value of the native apple software falls away.
it is a big value add for the os though, i agree.

some software is only available on pc, some only on mac. some for both.
at some level, with your specific needs, mac will be better and with other needs, pc will be better.
so let's not sell either platform as the graphics be-all and end all.

there is however one common thing when it comes to top end graphics.
you will pay a lot for software and hardware. which is why people defend their purchasing decisions to fervently.
you owe loyalty to nobody when it comes to proprietary platforms. choose the one which works for you or better yet, make your own combo.

windows 7 is pretty awesome.. but then its like a vista that works. Beside cosmetic changes and the ability to pin apps to task bar where they run/show etc can't say i've actually used win7 for all it's capable of. I wish the US gov etc forced them to upgrade vista machines for free or a fraction of cost just because it sucks so bad comparatively.

Have you actually tried to do any of those things on a toy netbook because I have and it is an exasperating endevour, especially if you don't have the hands of a child. Cramped keyboards and a miniscule trackpad are a high price to pay for the privilidge of using a screen you can barely see. I have a netbook and now that I have a 13" MBP I fear it will spending it's remaining days protecting my paperwork from the treacherous PE winds.

Back to the topic at hand however. Compared to it's predecessors windows 7 is a great os. I don't blame people for adopting it. On the otherhand 10.6 may not be Apple's finest hour.
 
Well as bwana says compared to all microsoft's other OS's windows 7 is so good i feel because it works almost flawlessly. When it was launched drivers were freely available, it never crashes. It is by the far the best microsoft OS i have ever used in terms of it just working everyday without giving problems.

There are a couple of really nice things added to it over vista and xp without a doubt.

The problem like i said is the apple okes seem to enjoy having a dig at windows for some odd reason they are just not happy to say well i use mac, i find they are always justifying their purchase and putting windows down. So for me use what works for you. If you don't like windows then so be it.

Lets be fair - the love gets shared both ways - windows and mac users both give as good as they get. The problem is some fanatics, from either camp, take it way too seriously.

Windows 7 has a few quirks, especially in File management and File transfer speeds... so it is by no means perfect yet. But yes, I am loving it at the moment.

I would love to get my hands on an Apple machine (if they were a bit cheaper and more readily available) and use it side by side, just like I use my Linux machines side by side. It IS OK to use both, isn't it?
 
Having options are great, if i was stuck with only windows as an option left in the world I would be pissed, same for OSX but not as pissed though :p

Most video production professionals prefer Final Cut Studio, Shake, Color, to Adobe Production Suite. You can still buy Adobe softs on the Mac, just that you also have the option of Aparture, Logic Pro and Final Cut Studio/Shake. Apple for those people offers more choice.

To a degree that's true. However with OSX there is just so much less d-cking around with settings, AVs, registry cleaners, optimisers etc. Getting everything working under Win is a bigger pain in the butt. When time is money, and you can buy the same system for less (Mac Pro 2006 vs similar Xeon Dell workstation) it makes no sense to not go Mac -- unless you need to run a high end CAD application like CATIA. Autocad, I don't know now, but previously used to be a baby CAD/CAE package and big production houses such as Daimmler, Perkins, BMW, etc did not use it, but ran packages like CATIA and others. In the past these ran on UNIX/IRIX/AIX.

Don't buy from dell or any other big evil corporations, they just rip you off. Go for something locally assembled by your towns friendly computer shop. Insist on AMD processors and motherboards from tier2 manufacturers.
Its not only cheaper but also supports the little guys and you might get stuff that are not unethically made using child labour or copied innovation.

I do... I have a Mac and a PC... Macs are nice... I admit that... but lets face it... everything u can do on a Mac, u can do on a PC (albeit slightly differently)... it doesn't work the other way around though...

Yeah... Snow Leopard is nice... but I probably use it like 20% of my time... the rest is Windows 7...

ok so 1 out of how many again?
I use both too and prefer OSX, winblows 7 drm in the media centre has killed it off as a HTPC for me now too, I can't watch some content via dstv without the drm screen coming up.
