I have to put NT4 on a PC but I have a few questions...

What is the max size HDD NT4 can see ?

Currently, the PC is running XP with a few HDD's...

C: 20GB
D: 50GB
E: 60GB
F: 40GB
G: 40GB
W: 50GB
X: 60GB
Y: 40GB
Z: 40GB

It's all partitions of 2 drives that are 300GB+

Will these change?

With NT SP4 in theory it should. I must ask you though why on earth do you want to use NT 4?

Are these drives IDE?

The maximum size of the system partition is limited to 7.8 gigabytes (GB).

A boot partition is defined as the partition containing the system files. For Windows NT, this is the partition containing the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. There is no limit for the boot partition.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224526

So simply split drive C into two partitions - 2GB for the boot files and 18GB for the system files. Use the remaining space on the 2GB volume for the page file. Use NTFS on all partitions.

I would suggest if you are going to downgrade from XP rather install Windows 2000 with the latest SP

@ spiderz, great minds think a like

But like the others said, rather install Windows 2000 Server. If the machine is running fine in Windows XP it will perform the same or even better in Windows 2000 Server.

Thing is, we have this problem currently, this XP PC is running like a server.
When 10+ users are connected to the PC, I have to force disconnect them for more people to connect, it's a irratating thing that I do alot on Monday's and Tuesday's.

We need to fix this problem, suggestion from PTA IT is to go back to IT, but then again, the partitions will bugger up, the sizes the drivers are partitioned currently are just the right sizes, so they can't change.

Why NT4? It's dead.

You can also have a look at SME server - will support large, modern hard drives, and also have windows file and printer sharing enabled. (It's a Linux server btw).

I know Lib, but my company refuses to spend anymore money so since they have a NT4 license lying around, that is THEIR work around.

I personally don't want to do it, so I'm going to try these 'patches' and such.

@ gdiza - SME server is free, no strings attached.

I personally won't try to install NT4 on XP - as things might go screwy and you will lose data.

Good luck ;)
