Basically here's the low down. I have a piece of crap laptop. Given to me by a friend, with no Windows disc. Anyway I had to blitz the blooming thing a month and a few days ago.

I got my paws on a Windows disc from a mate which unfortunately I could not activate (no activation key), as you are probably aware, after 31 days Windows expires. Which is fine because I still have the disc and I have nothing important on the lappy that I need so no big deal really.

The thing is I never ever turn my laptop off and as a result even though the expiration day has come and gone, I'm still able to use Windows.

So as long as I don't turn the thing off I have free Windows :-)

My question is this, is this a loophole? Can they have me for not having activated my Windows? Not that they'd track me down or anything, it's just a hypothetical....

Opinions would be appreciated :D

Yep! The MicroSoft spy satellite dedicated to this kind of mission will definitely hunt you down if you don't activate your legitimate copy of Windows within 30 days. Interpol will then arrest you and take you to a remote island where they will torture you for not activating Windows.

NOTE: If you make a hat out of tin foil, the satellite won't be able to track you down.

And the will MAKE you turn it off before they take you away.

Whats does this have to do with Open Source?????????

Licence your crap or shove linux on it.

As for updates your laptop is vulnerable and will be some botnet's bitch.

Top Tip: Make sure the hat is shiny side out or they don't work!

Now I know MS aren't that good :D Although I'd enjoy the torture bit, the image of Bill Gtes and hi buddies taking turns in attaching a car battery to my man boobs gives me chills down my spine and a wrm fuzzy feelng inside :D

Over my dead body :D

Absolutely Sweet Eff all but, it's the nick name I give my OS at the moment :D

You will eventually need to activate it. You also won't be able to do any updates without activating it.

True, however the reminder that updates are ready is annoying (yes I know you can turn the notifictions off)

Pedantic me today says: WTF? I'll never lience my pooh! It's bad eough I have to licence my car AND t.v. :D And being someone's botnet bitch seems nice, almost as nice as taking a shower with some politicians I bet. Sadly I'll have to get in a queue for that one becuse Jelly Totsi will be there too. bummer! :D

Did you read the license agreement that you agreed to when you installed the software?

Dude seriously? You've read one you've read them all :D I don't know too many people that do. :D

Of course yes I'm muckin about here, but I will just have to keep re-installing Windows as at the moment this lappy is not worth going out to buy a new OS for. I've tried Ubuntu which I had issues with installing. (Dont think this pc meets minimum specs). I know there's a lot of other Open Source OS out there (I'm a very big fan of Open Source, GIMP, Blender, Open Office etc).

Thanks for your replies guys.

I`m sure the windows kernel makes it go bsod once a day just to avoid that sort of thing.
+ You have too much faith in Eskom

I think our man Retrobok's in London, and thus beyond the reach of Eskom...:D. Still, that don't mean you don't get power outages in the UK.

Well I'm about a 9 days over expired no bsod yet, and luckily I don't have to rely on Eskom :D and yes that's because I'm in London

Not too worried about losing what I have on the lappy really.... just the inconvenience of having to reinstall...

The only thing that's been playing up is my usb optical mouse, but surely Windows got eff all to do with that and is more likely because I keep dropping the bugger... :D
